class="content__text" ‘(Gaurav) Gupta’s micro works similarly do away with a distinct beginning or an end. The ‘Entwined’ series (2023), sinuous masses of blue hues accented with flecks of fiery colour, explores the intense physicality of the city where bodies cannot but mingle and often the individual is lost to the group. Working with these relatively extreme contrasts in scale, Gupta accentuates the strength and comparatively equal weight of the group of works. Through the changes in density, the loosening and tightening of his gestures along with the deepening and diluting of colour, Gupta achieves an effectual visual blast with a subtle indeterminacy that compels one to listen, look and linger.’ — Cleo Roberts-Komireddi — #gauravgupta #painting @gaurr_gupta

class="content__text" Many Congratulations to Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran on opening ‘Undergod’ at Sullivan+Strumpf in Melbourne today. Ambitious in both materiality and scale, this exhibition imagines vibrant mythological beings who exist in planes between human and divine with the exuberance, cheek and depth the artist has become known for. While this new body of work continues Ramesh’s interests in syncretic languages specific to South Asia and the histories of figurative sculpture related to Hindu, Buddhist and Christian frameworks, there are various new developments. The exhibition includes over twenty new works, two of which are kinetic, and various ceramic works installed on ramshackle plinths around the gallery. “I wanted these large sculptures to come alive with the introduction of industrial technology. It’s another nod to the mixing of time periods, languages and visual registers in my work.” — #rameshmarionithiyendran #idols #ceramic #bronze #sculpture

class="content__text" Fiza Khatri’s recent thesis show at the Yale School of Art ‘features Gharial crocodiles, a critically endangered species found in South Asia and represented in the collection of the Yale Peabody Museum. The specimens housed at the Museum have been isolated and removed from their habitats for the production of scientific knowledge. In these paintings, they are placed back into an environment composed of landscape elements from Manghopir, the crocodile shrine in Northern Karachi, as a fantasy of return and repair.’ Images 1-4: ‘Return to Water’, 2023, acrylic and oil on canvas, 5 panels Image 6: ‘Dreaming of Decemberistan I', 2022, charcoal on paper — #fizakhatri #painting #crocodile #charcoal

class="content__text" ‘Often using a constricted palette, with just two or three base colours in acrylic and oil, (Gaurav) Gupta applies his thinned pigment with a range of implements including rags, brushes, sponges, and his hands. Laying his canvas on the floor, from a heightened position, Gupta experiments slowly in real time making visually transparent his deliberations: colours are mixed and remixed directly, marks get made, wiped out, covered over and condensed. Some streaks leak into each other, on occasion his gestures splutter or flourish like calligraphic strokes.’ — Cleo Roberts-Komireddi Gaurav Gupta’s solo exhibition, ‘Confluence’, is now open. Do visit. — #gauravgupta #painting #mumbai

class="content__text" We are delighted to open today, Art Night Thursday, a debut solo exhibition by artist Gaurav Gupta. Gupta utilises painting to explore the limits and depths of our sense of perception. With expressive brush marks and a range of pigmentation, his works oscillate between the abstract and pictorial, encouraging a slow contemplation of the painterly surface. With this focus on the qualities of painting that are autonomous to the medium - namely the material, visceral, and physical qualities of paint - he offers a counterpoint to our increasingly fleeting ways of looking and asks the eye to dwell. We look forward to welcoming visitors between 7 and 9pm today. — #gauravgupta #painting #art #bombay @gaurr_gupta@mumbaigalleryweekend

class="content__text" The fourth edition of Desert X has opened at sites across the Coachella Valley and features 'No. 1225 Chainlink' by Rana Begum, who is one among 11 participating artists. Curated by Artistic Director Neville Wakefield and Co-Curator Diana Campbell, the exhibition examines social and environmental themes with a focus on the changes that give form to a world increasingly shaped by climate crisis, globalism, and the political and economic migrations that follow in their wake. 'Approached from a distance, Rana Begum’s 'No.1225 Chainlink' 2022-23 appears as a shimmering pyramidal haze of color floating above the desert floor. Taking the form of a series of concentric rings that respond to the ubiquity of the chain link fence spread across the Coachella Valley, the maze-like structure of containment, allows light and air, sand and water, as well as people, to filter through, revealing a paradox whereby the place of greatest confinement is that of greatest freedom.’ Many congratulations to Rana — and a special shout-out to our dear friend, curator Diana Campbell. 📷 Lance Gerber — #desertx #artcommissions #ranabegum @dhakadiana

class="content__text" Shiraz Bayjoo’s ‘Chi Lakaz’ (or little house in Mauritian creole) references religious altars or spiritual offerings. These sculptures present themselves as altars, partly referencing catholic churches, and are built of the same tropical hardwood used in places like Mauritius and Goa for museum interiors and churches. Employing simple geometric forms, Bayjoo’s objects allow the weight of the material to speak. 'For us in Mauritius, and I believe it is the case in most places, it was the women, the matriarch, that carried our ancestors through hardship and kept the bonds of community together. In these simple sculptures, I reference sites of refuge, sisters holding hands (my aunts from 1950s), and objects that have often been used as talismans or spiritual offerings, from seeds to sea shells.’ ‘Chi Lakaz One’ is on view on our stand, B8, @artdubai until 5 March alongside work by @permindarkaur@ranabegumstudio@lubnachowdhary@sayanchanda and #shezaddawood Also don’t miss Shiraz Bayjoo’s project ‘Searching for LIbertalia’ (2019) at Bait Al Shamsi as part of ‘Sharjah Biennale 15: Thinking Historically in the Present’. — #artdubai #shirazbayjoo #ranabegum #lubnachowdhary #shezaddawood #permindarkaur #sharjahbiennale #art #craft #sculpture
