Shiraz Bayjoo’s ‘Chi Lakaz’ (or little house in Mauritian creole) references religious altars or spiritual offerings. These sculptures present themselves as altars, partly referencing catholic churches, and are built of the same tropical hardwood used in places like Mauritius and Goa for museum interiors and churches. Employing simple geometric forms, Bayjoo’s objects allow the weight of the material to speak. 'For us in Mauritius, and I believe it is the case in most places, it was the women, the matriarch, that carried our ancestors through hardship and kept the bonds of community together. In these simple sculptures, I reference sites of refuge, sisters holding hands (my aunts from 1950s), and objects that have often been used as talismans or spiritual offerings, from seeds to sea shells.’

‘Chi Lakaz One’ is on view on our stand, B8, @artdubai until 5 March alongside work by @permindarkaur@ranabegumstudio@lubnachowdhary@sayanchanda and #shezaddawood

Also don’t miss Shiraz Bayjoo’s project ‘Searching for LIbertalia’ (2019) at Bait Al Shamsi as part of ‘Sharjah Biennale 15: Thinking Historically in the Present’.
