class="content__text" Sixty-two people, including 12 children, are so far confirmed to have died after a wooden boat sank in rough seas off Steccato di Cutro, Calabria, Southern Italy. The boat had left Turkey four days before, carrying people from Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan, who were just metres away from the shore when the tragedy occurred. It is the deadliest migrant shipwreck to occur so close to the shore in Italy since 368 people lost their lives off the island of Lampedusa, in 2013. It becomes clear, once again, that the EU must act to develop an effective plan of action about the central Mediterranean pact on migration and asylum. class="content__text" These days mark the first anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Since then, millions of refugees have arrived in Poland, where I spent several days on assignment for @natgeo and @nytimes , trying to document the stories of refugees fleeing from the Russian bombing. What I witnessed back then, was an enormous flow of shocked, unarmed people, most of them women and children, who had to leave everything overnight, not knowing if they will ever see their homes and relatives again. class="content__text" The following experiment with generative text-image Ai stems, again, from a succession of connections of thoughts - see the previous post. The idea of 'horizon' expands the limit and projects itself beyond the spatial boundaries of “infinity'. And so, how can I not dedicate a homage to a master of Italian photography who created in 1974 (the year of my birth) ‘Infinito’? "Nulla dies sine linea": No day without a sign: this sentence was widespread in the Middle Ages, the root of which can be found in Plinio, when he recounts that there was no day when the painter Apelles did not practise by drawing a line. Later it was taken up by Paul Klee as a kind of motto and placed, in 1938, as a comment next to his work No. 365. No day without a photo of the sky. Photographer Luigi Ghirri decided to take 365 pictures of the sky. I tried to describe verbally each photo of "Infinito” to an algorithm and let it create an imagined "copy" of each skies photographed by Ghiirri. They are collected, in an automated iteration in the same sequence, number and size as the original masterpiece of photography. I admit I freely added a few sunsets that are almost nonexistent in Infinito.

class="content__text" 100 River Ob⁠ ⁠ "If there is something that opens the horizons, it is precisely ignorance." ⁠ [...]⁠ It is a tortuous thought, the one going on in my mind. I wonder if it is happening because, while reading, from the window on my left, the flat-blue and moderately misty horizon of the Gunpower river bay opens to my view or because I lack the right amount of morning caffeine. ⁠ ⁠ The landscape in front of me is not extremely exciting. Still, it reminds me of a photo taken a few years earlier from the shore of the river Ob in Russia's Yamal Peninsula during a freezing -42c morning in 2019. The river, in its vastness, was a pale blue frozen horizon crossed by a dark blue glare. ⁠ [...] ⁠ By a tortuous generative association of thoughts, I connect Gary's sentence to this image - aided by the window landscape – and to an article by Lev Manovich on generative algorithms that turn textual input into images that I have read a few weeks before. ⁠ ⁠ While waiting to arrive in Washington, I uploaded “River Ob” into the DALLE-2 software and tried to describe the photograph. ⁠ ⁠ Read more on the link in the bio. ⁠ ⁠ ⁠ ⁠ ⁠ ⁠

class="content__text" Generating 100 versions of one of my most sold prints (River Ob. 2018 Ed.8+2 AP) by verbally describing the original to AI and adding minimal aesthetic variations each time. I can do this while travelling on a train and observing a potentially similar landscape in a very different context from the Yamal Peninsula, where the original photo was taken during the winter of five years ago. The photograph is no longer just reproducible; it is re-generable and dissociated from context, indexicality, time and space. There is no agreement about the signature of Russian and Belarusian scientists who have chosen not to take a position about the current political situation. The temporary compromise, supported by two-thirds of the institutes, is to not publish anything until further notice. In normal times, CERN’s four physics experiments using proton collisions publish numerous scientific articles a year. But in March 2022, the number of new research papers on the LHC experiments fell to zero. That is because, after the invasion of Ukraine, some members objected to co-authorship with Russian institutes, and even with individuals working for them. This issue has raised some concerns in the science community since it could exacerbate the already difficult situation. Some experts say that maintaining scientific collaboration should be a main priority, being one of the most effective ways of solving humankind’s problems.
