class="content__text" Sixty-two people, including 12 children, are so far confirmed to have died after a wooden boat sank in rough seas off Steccato di Cutro, Calabria, Southern Italy. The boat had left Turkey four days before, carrying people from Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan, who were just metres away from the shore when the tragedy occurred. It is the deadliest migrant shipwreck to occur so close to the shore in Italy since 368 people lost their lives off the island of Lampedusa, in 2013. It becomes clear, once again, that the EU must act to develop an effective plan of action about the central Mediterranean pact on migration and asylum.
