News has spread that, at the moment, about 70 CERN papers are awaiting publication or peer review, while the rest is completely at a standstill.
The reason? There is no agreement about the signature of Russian and Belarusian scientists who have chosen not to take a position about the current political situation. The temporary compromise, supported by two-thirds of the institutes, is to not publish anything until further notice.
In normal times, CERN’s four physics experiments using proton collisions publish numerous scientific articles a year. But in March 2022, the number of new research papers on the LHC experiments fell to zero.
That is because, after the invasion of Ukraine, some members objected to co-authorship with Russian institutes, and even with individuals working for them.
This issue has raised some concerns in the science community since it could exacerbate the already difficult situation. Some experts say that maintaining scientific collaboration should be a main priority, being one of the most effective ways of solving humankind’s problems.
