class="content__text" This resource highlights a few things: the layered history of how the holiday came to be as there were many ideas about the actual date, whether it was a holiday for a few presidents versus all of them… and more. it was a lot! It also doesn’t shy away about the factual truth of the presidents’ lives because despite what people who want to hide history say, the truth matters. class="content__text" 🌍History should be more than a cute craft or memorizing a bunch of boring facts. ⭐We can and should teach children compelling stories, untold narratives, and thought provoking information that they can have rich discussions about. ⭐We should connect the past to the future in order to learn from it and help our students grow into caring, informed, empathetic members of a diverse society. ⭐Using a key figure students already know, like Dr. King, is a great entry point to branch out to someone they aren't as familiar with! 👏🏿Bayard Rustin should be a household name. It has been said that his amazing ideas and organizational skills are the main reason the March on Washington was so successful! 🔗Let me know if you need a link to grab this Choose Your Own Learning Path clickable eBook from TpT. class="content__text" During small group, I gave my students a stack of high frequency word cards and asked them to sort them into groups that made sense. The first time they did it they sorted them all by beginning letter(s). Then I asked them to look at all of the phonics elements we had learned thus far, and asked if they could sort by sounds or rules instead of letters. For the second sort, they immediately began group silent e words, floss rule words, words with y as a vowel, and the vowel team double e. When we switched from this activity to a decodable reader, they were even more observant of previously learned phonics elements and more fluent in their reading. It's been amazing to trust the process and watch all of the lessons we've learned fall into place and strengthen their reading skills each week! Have you ever tried a "sight word" sort?

class="content__text" Naomi’s teaching slides are my favorite. Then, on her ride home from school she tells me everything that her students said, and I’m always blown away. If you need those little social studies posters that she has, visit our website! It is a free download. This is from the More Than a Walk to School unit and yes, she realized that little typo at the bottom. It happens. 🥰

class="content__text" If you know anything about the way we roll, then you know that we believe that some things are too critical for crafts. We encourage you to resist the urge to only teach the glorified versions of history. It's not going to hurt children to learn the full truth. No one is perfect, right? So, while many presidents did some good, a lot of the decisions made by these men affect the way we live today. Ignoring that fact doesn't change it- but it can help us understand it. #socialstudiesk3 🇺🇸 leave a comment if you need the link!

class="content__text" Anytime I learn about historical event and I see photos, the first thing I do is look for myself. I always wonder what I would’ve been doing if I would’ve been alive at that time. You can imagine how much time I spent looking through photos only to come up short. We aim to change that one project at a time. TabbandObrien.com (social studies club members… This is already yours! We sent an email out with a link and video today!)

class="content__text" PA skills can start at 3! Activities like this help prepare your child's brain to be able to read. Our brains did not evolve to be able to read. 🧠 Phonological awareness skills sort of rewire our brains to be able to connect written and spoken language! We repurpose parts of our brain that evolved to take care of different functions. I started this journey with Jonah when he was 2. Just a few minutes here and there in the car, on the couch, or on a scooter ride. It's amazing what little minds can do with a little practice and time. ❤️ Because he knows his letter sounds and can segment and blend 2-4 sounds easily. He can read 2-4 letter words on his own, as long as they contain sounds that he knows. He only knows A-Z short vowels for now. All of this was achieved through fun games, activities, songs, and time. As a mom and teacher who sees how many students are impacted by schools and programs not teaching reading accurately, this was important for me to stay ahead of! I've seen firsthand how much time it takes to undo poor reading instruction. I have a F R E E phonological awareness resource if you'd like to start with your child or students! 🔗 Link in bio!
