During small group, I gave my students a stack of high frequency word cards and asked them to sort them into groups that made sense.

The first time they did it they sorted them all by beginning letter(s).

Then I asked them to look at all of the phonics elements we had learned thus far, and asked if they could sort by sounds or rules instead of letters.

For the second sort, they immediately began group silent e words, floss rule words, words with y as a vowel, and the vowel team double e.

When we switched from this activity to a decodable reader, they were even more observant of previously learned phonics elements and more fluent in their reading.

It's been amazing to trust the process and watch all of the lessons we've learned fall into place and strengthen their reading skills each week!

Have you ever tried a "sight word" sort?
