class="content__text" NRT’s Statement regarding the Survival International Report expressing concerns about the Northern Kenya Rangelands Carbon Project. The report is misguided, poorly researched and inaccurate in nearly all respects. Read and download the report here: https://www.nrt-kenya.org/news-2/2023/3/23/statement-regarding-the-survival-international-report (Link in bio).

class="content__text" It’s World Water Day! Today our focus shifts to the Leiyai community who inhabit the semi-arid lands surrounding the densely forested Marsabit National Park. For years, the Leiyai community in Songa Community Conservancy has been relying on an old water supply connection in a nearby forest to access clean water. This connection has been broken by elephants for some time, resulting in a water shortage. In the last two years, the situation became dire and was aggravated by insecurity, placing women and girls at risk as they had to trek five kilometers to fetch water from a nearby village. In 2022, NRT repaired the broken water supply system in the Conservancy with the support of @AFD_France . New water pipelines were laid and a 100,000-litre storage tank was installed to supply water to the Leiyai community. This has made life better and easier for the community. #WorldWaterDay @rainforesttrust | Fonds Français pour l'Environnement Mondial

class="content__text" With great pride, we announce 📣 📣 the appearance of NRT Trading and @beadworkskenya 's Saina collar on Stephen Colbert's Late Show, an incredible recognition to women beaders in northern Kenya! Thanks to NRT Trading's amazing partner @ibumovement , we had the honor of having actress and Oscar winner @janefonda wear the Saina necklace, made in northern Kenya to the world by pastoralists women. Through BeadWORKS, we have empowered 1,200 women in nine NRT member community conservancies, who produced 62,592 BeadWORKS items in 2022, earning Ksh 32,489,107 (USD 275,331) from the sale of the beaded products. Women earned Ksh 8,328,670 million (USD 70,581) as labor payment for the creation of the products through this handicraft business, which they used to support their children's education, small businesses, and improving their families' lives without resorting to environmentally damaging activities like charcoal production. To support our artisan women from northern Kenya, you can buy our Saina collar at the IBU Movement website. #beadworkskenya #BeadWORKS #northernkenya #women #beaders

class="content__text" Ahead of International Women’s Day 2023, NRT, in collaboration with @conservationorg , hosted the third Women's Leadership Summit in Ruko Community Conservancy in Baringo County, bringing together 70 women leaders and teacher interns from 43 NRT member community conservancies. The topics discussed during the Summit included ways to empower and mentor young girls and emerging women leaders to improve their participation in conservation, education, diversity in leadership, and gender equality in community conservation. The women also evaluated the previous summits. Due to cultural practices, the inclusion of women has historically been an overlooked aspect of development in northern and coastal Kenya. Thanks to the existence of community conservancies, women now have more opportunities than ever to assume leadership positions and have a say in decisions concerning rangeland management, conservancy governance, and community development. The summit was also supported by the European Union in Kenya| @Italian Agency for Development Cooperation - Nairobi Office| The Nature Conservancy in Africa| USAID Kenya| Embassy of Denmark in Kenya and Somalia| Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi. #Women #WomenLeaders #InternationalWomensDay2023 #IWD2023

class="content__text" In NRT member community conservancies, indigenous communities are spearheading wildlife conservation. Community members often are the first to notice when wild animals are in distress as they host wildlife on their lands. Communities have saved many wild animals, from elephants trapped in mud to giraffes injured by poachers' snares, by contacting their Conservancy Managers, who alert our Joint Communications Centre (JOCC), ensuring our wildlife response units promptly rescue any wildlife in trouble. It takes a village to keep wildlife safe. This #WorldWildlifeDay is a grand opportunity to appreciate the communities across the NRT landscape, our many unfailing partners, and all of you who share our love for wildlife and support our conservation efforts, ensuring that we can continue to protect wildlife and prevent the extinction of endangered species. #PartnershipsforConservation #WWD2023

class="content__text" Three NRT coastal community conservancies of Pate, Kiunga, and Lower Tana, are leading the way in mangrove restoration and protection in Lamu, Kenya. Since 2018, communities, primarily women, have planted 95,494 mangroves, which are critical weapons in the fight against climate change. So far, communities have restored more than 15 hectares of mangrove forest cover. With support from @nature_africa , Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Kenya Marine and Fisheries Institute (KMFRI) and the County Government of Lamu, they hope to restore 35,000 hectares in five years. #mangroves #WorldWetlandsDay2023 #WetlandsRestoration #RestoreWetlandsKe #marine #ecosystem
