class="content__text" On The Great Indoors podcast today we talk about THIS! @lilyallen Brooklyn home which graced the pages of @archdigest this month and went viral on YouTube is affirmation that maximalist interiors are EVERYTHING right now. This design celebrates a unique British eccentricity that Lily has always embodied and her home is as one-off as she is. And this, is what the maximalist interior is all about. I absolutely love it. ❤️ If you needed further proof that Maximalism is kicking Minimalism off it’s perch then the esteemed decluttering guru @mariekondo declared recently that, three kids in, she no longer has time to tidy up. Finally! Welcome to the club Marie! Listen to what @mad_about_the_house think about it all over on your podcast app. And don’t forget to give us a follow while you are there! Could you go as maximalist as Lily? Or is not tidying the toys away as far as your prepared to go? Let me know in the comments below. And go find the complete AD tour of Lily’s home over on YouTube. 12 minutes of heaven. class="content__text" Let’s talk about rugs because I’m slightly obsessed. They are an essential element of every room I design as they add a layer of softness an opportunity for pattern and help pull a floor plan together. My biggest tip is go as big as you can afford! I look out for vintage rugs as antique fairs or online markets for bang for my buck. Another thing I love to do is have a piece of patterned carpet cut to size and finished off with a colour coded border. @alternativeflooring is my go too for pattern carpet for their fabulous designer collaborations and great colour palettes. I leave around 30cm around the room and tuck the rug under furniture to pull it all together. It’s a great way to create impact on the floor without the commitment of fitted pattern carpet. CREDITS 1. Rug made in Ribbon magenta by @margoselbystudio at @alternativeflooring 2. Seagrass or natural flooring is ideal under rugs. This is seagrass herringbone by @alternativeflooring and I bought the rug on a trip to Marrakesh 3. I love a rug in a bathroom! This is vintage Moroccan by @sundayandstory and makes the room feel so cosy. 4. A large rug in a bedroom that tucks all the way under the bed is so super luxurious. This was a collaboration with @libertylondon and @alternativeflooring that’s sadly discontinued but I adore the flower strewn floor it creates. 5. Antique rugs are a lovely way to add a feeling of warmth and heritage. I sourced this one from Ardingly antique fair. 6. Rugs in kids rooms are brilliant. When they are young, go cheap as chips as they will likely get stained, but help protect the fitted carpet beneath. When they get older you can invest in something made to last. This bold stripe helps elongate a small bedroom and ties in with the colour scheme. It’s another great design by @margoselbystudio for @alternativeflooring and it’s large size and super soft wool texture makes it a pleasure to play on. #ad #pressgift #rugs #alternativeflooring #interiordesign #maximalistinteriors #colourlover #banthebeige #bbbinteriors #boldbravebeautifulinteriors #ihavethisthingwithrugs #ihavethisthingwithpatterns

class="content__text" The glory of colour! This year I set on my vision board to get out and connect with more people and it’s started off in fabulous style! I attended the event Reimagining Colour this week at the @maddoxgallery hosted by @harlequinfw to celebrate and discuss the relevance of colour in interior design and art. I ensured I got a front row seat along with my fellow colour lovers @sophieabbottartist@annalysejacobs for the panel discussion. Creative director @clairevallis , Professor of colour Stephen Westland and artists @dairovargas@njgrindrod explained how they work with colour and why it is so intrinsic to our emotional well-being and humanness. It was fascinating, validating and I left feeling inspired and energised! Finding the colours which lift you up, make you feel strong, give you your sense of identity and belonging is so very important in all aspects of art and design. This was the main takeaway of the event. We must do the work to get in touch with the tones that resonate with us, and then surround ourselves in them! I asked professor Stephen if there was a type of person who would genuinely feel emotionally supported by an all grey interior. He looked doubtful, but said he’d get back to me! I’m particularly happy to have found this silk neon pink blouse from @pomlampsonlondon which quite frankly makes me feel my best self! What colour gives you the feel good vibes? class="content__text" Who has a renovation story to tell? The dust, the drama, the expense, the utter inconvenience! Today on The Great indoors podcast, we pass the mic to you, and here about your battles with the builders, the vagarity of old houses, the dust….oh the dust. This is our kitchen which we had to totally rip out after discovering rising damp shortly after moving in. What was going to be a simple rip out ended up taking the room back to brick. Plasterers, electricians, plumbers, underfloor heating, carpenters, not to mention the builder husband, and my mum who did the wallpapering! To save money, we bought Howdens off the shelf base unit carcasses, and got custom fronts made by our carpenter for a more bespoke kitchen look. Reclaimed school lab worktops and reclaimed terracotta floor tiles added period charm to our old farm house. Then wallpaper! In the north facing room I embraced the lack of light and went dark and the effect is magic. Share with me your renovation horror stories in the comments below… Wallpaper is rubarber by @borastapeter Paint is Hunters green by @zoffanyfw Reclaimed terracotta floor @ca_pietra_

class="content__text" Painting our plastic UVPC windows was one of the best decisions I made. We decided not to replace them when we moved in, even though they look awful in our period farm house. My husband felt strongly that it was wrong to replace windows that were functioning perfectly, just based on aesthetics. But I hated their bright white shiny plasticness with a passion! So we painted them! I chose Lamp Black to help camouflage them so they don’t shine out against the dark wallpaper. Simply use an All Surace primer on the plastic then you can use a top coat of acrylic eggshell in your chosen colour. They are holding up perfectly. And it saved us £16k getting them all replaced! #renovationideas #renovationhacks #uvpcwindows #darkdecor #banthebeige #bbbinteriors

class="content__text" Do you fall into these common traps when starting out designing your room schemes. I get plenty of DM’s asking me what colour to paint walls? What goes with a new sofa?
