Let’s talk about rugs because I’m slightly obsessed. They are an essential element of every room I design as they add a layer of softness an opportunity for pattern and help pull a floor plan together. My biggest tip is go as big as you can afford! I look out for vintage rugs as antique fairs or online markets for bang for my buck. Another thing I love to do is have a piece of patterned carpet cut to size and finished off with a colour coded border. @alternativeflooring is my go too for pattern carpet for their fabulous designer collaborations and great colour palettes. I leave around 30cm around the room and tuck the rug under furniture to pull it all together. It’s a great way to create impact on the floor without the commitment of fitted pattern carpet.

CREDITS
1. Rug made in Ribbon magenta by @margoselbystudio at @alternativeflooring
2. Seagrass or natural flooring is ideal under rugs. This is seagrass herringbone by @alternativeflooring and I bought the rug on a trip to Marrakesh
3. I love a rug in a bathroom! This is vintage Moroccan by @sundayandstory and makes the room feel so cosy.
4. A large rug in a bedroom that tucks all the way under the bed is so super luxurious. This was a collaboration with @libertylondon and @alternativeflooring that’s sadly discontinued but I adore the flower strewn floor it creates.
5. Antique rugs are a lovely way to add a feeling of warmth and heritage. I sourced this one from Ardingly antique fair.
6. Rugs in kids rooms are brilliant. When they are young, go cheap as chips as they will likely get stained, but help protect the fitted carpet beneath. When they get older you can invest in something made to last. This bold stripe helps elongate a small bedroom and ties in with the colour scheme. It’s another great design by @margoselbystudio for @alternativeflooring and it’s large size and super soft wool texture makes it a pleasure to play on.
