Don’t just look. Look deeper. 👁️ Chances are you’ve ‘seen’ this early view of the nowadays world famous Herengracht in Amsterdam more than once. But did you really ‘look’? Watch The Golden Bend come to life in a breathtaking way and, for a minute, feel like a casual passer-by along the canal back in 1671, enjoying this fascinating view in an extraordinary time. ✨🔍 🖼️ View of the Golden Bend in the Herengracht, Gerrit Berckheyde, 1671 #Rijksmuseum #Amsterdam #LookDeeper #GoldenBend #Museum #Art

Dam Square is one place in Amsterdam that’s always been busy and going through changes. Much of what you can see in this 1901 drawing by George Hendrik Breitner is still the same today, but much has also changed. The horse-drawn tram for example was a popular means of transport around the turn of the 19th century, but has now disappeared from the streets. 🎠 🖼️ Dam Square Amsterdam, George Hendrik Breitner, 1901 #Rijksmuseum #Amsterdam #DamSquare #ThenAndNow #Museum

Another one! Dutch speed skater Ireen Wüst (@ireenw) won gold at the 1.500 meters at the Olympics in Beijing. 🥇 She is the first athlete in Olympic history to win gold medals in individual events at five (!) different Olympic Games. One of her predecessors was Houkje Gerrits Bouma, who won a skating race in Leeuwarden for women in 1809. Sixty-four unmarried women vied for a gold cap-brooch. Nicolaas Baur painted the finalists with bare arms, a jettisoned cloak on the ice. It left little to men’s imagination and caused an outcry; therefore it was the last women’s race for many years. ⛸️⠀ ⠀ 🖼️ Women’s Skating Competition on the Stadsgracht in Leeuwarden, 21 January 1809, Nicolaas Baur, 1809⠀ ⠀ #Rijksmuseum #Amsterdam #Olympics #DailyArt #SpeedSkating
