⁣Another one! Dutch speed skater Ireen Wüst (@ireenw) won gold at the 1.500 meters at the Olympics in Beijing. 🥇 She is the first athlete in Olympic history to win gold medals in individual events at five (!) different Olympic Games. One of her predecessors was Houkje Gerrits Bouma, who won a skating race in Leeuwarden for women in 1809. Sixty-four unmarried women vied for a gold cap-brooch. Nicolaas Baur painted the finalists with bare arms, a jettisoned cloak on the ice. It left little to men’s imagination and caused an outcry; therefore it was the last women’s race for many years. ⛸️⠀
