class="content__text" Yesterday we had the pleasure of opening the “THE MONSTER HAS TURNED OUT WELL”. 👐 The small exhibition was put together in honour of the painter and draughtsman Herwig Zens, who would have turned 80 this year and his widow, Gerda Zens, who gifted us his work “The Etched Diary”. Today, the diary is regarded as the world’s longest etching. Nine metres of the forty-metres-long artefact are now unrolled and on show in our Bassano Hall on the 2nd floor. They focus on the sections of Herwig Zens’s life connected with the museum. Among our director general Sabine Haag, Nikolaus Kratzer/ @landesgalerie_noe, Viola Rühse / @imckrems, Kalina Strzalkowski / @zeineditions and Vienna Mayor @michaelludwig_official opened the show and were present among many more illoustrus guests, such as Gerda Zens, the late artist’s widow, and Brigitte Bierlein, former Austrian chancellor. Come by and see the show in the second floor of the museum from today on until 29 May.

class="content__text" 𝒜𝓅𝓅𝓁𝑒 𝒸𝓇𝓊𝓂𝒷𝓁𝑒, 𝒶𝓃𝓎𝑜𝓃𝑒? 🍎🫠 Gerard der Borch’s painting ‘The Apple Peeler’ takes us into a cosy kitchen – the perfect place to be on a chilly winter day. This masterpiece is one of our personal favourites. It is fairly small, but if you take a moment to look at it closely, the painting will unfold and create a homely atmosphere. Immediately, we are feeling like being part of the scene. You might wonder what (or who) is the woman preparing those apples for so delicately. And what is she thinking about, while her little daughter is watching attentively. This scene is probably a reference to a moralising epigram: It warns against fulfilling every wish of a child but even more so against doing the same for oneself … Parental care was a popular subject in Dutch painting and literature of the 17th century, and this artwork is a characteristic example of Dutch “fine painting”. Anyway, if you now have the wish to treat yourself with an apple pie or other delicacies, feel free to do so shamelessly. Hint: the @cafekhm in our Cupola Hall serves delicious apple strudel 😛 Gerard ter Borch (1617 Zwolle - 1681 Deventer), The Apple Peeler, c. 1660

class="content__text" From 7 March we’ll turn the museum on its head. 💫 In just a few weeks from now, we’ll open our next big exhibition BASELITZ. NAKED MASTERS and show one of the most eminent painters of our times in conversation with the Old Masters. Experience the naked truth from unexpected angles and a show, that casts a light on this elementary human condition. 🌜🌛With this exhibition Baselitz enters into a visual dialogue with Cranach, Altdorfer, Baldung Grien, Parmigianino, Correggio, Titian, and Rubens and more. He selected the works himself, focusing on formal and visual criteria. Since his early works, Baselitz has shown a pronounced awareness of art history in his works, being particularly impressed by Mannerism and its breach of rules. class="content__text" #Lovesick? All around us everybody is talking about the upcoming Valentine’s Day. 💖 Shops are full of pastel-colored gifts and beaming hearts. And we also just announced a tour dedicated to Cupid for next Tuesday. But for sure not everyone is in Valentine’s mood. 💔 So, for this week’s interior scene we chose an artwork dedicated to the topic of #lovesickness. This theme can actually be found frequently in Dutch literature and painting of the 17th century. It was usually presented in an ironic manner. ‘The Doctor’s Visit (Lovesick)’ is the title of this painting by Frans van Mieris. And it comes with a surprise: In this scene, the artist painted his newly wed wife. 👰 She was the model for the young lady who is visibly suffering. The doctor is taking her pulse and underscoring his diagnostic with a significant gesture: The young lady is lovesick. 🗝 The key to understanding the painting in its full dimension is the motto“amans amanti medicus” (“only love heals lovers”) and the fact that the artist’s marriage took place in 1657 - the same year he created this artwork. 😉 Mieris’ works were sold during his lifetime at remarkably high prices. Even for wealthy buyers as Archduke Leopold Wilhelm they weren’t easily affordable. 🎨 Together with his teacher, Gerrit Dou (also known as Gerard Dou), Mieris was famous for the so-called “fine paintings” created in Leiden. The characteristic features of these genre scenes were their small format, great detail and the fact that they were sometimes painted on gilt copper - like today’s painting. The collection of #KunsthistorischesMuseum #Vienna also comprises masterpieces by Gerrit Dou. We will have a look at one of them at the end of this interior series, when we will already be close to springtime and blossoms… 🌷 Who can guess the painting? Stay tuned during the next weeks for more inspiring #interior scenes! Frans van Mieris the Elder (1635 - 1681 Leiden), The Doctor’s Visit (Lovesick), 1657

class="content__text" 🏹 Cupid, the god of love, causes great emotions and a bit of chaos - not only on Valentine's Day! Titian and his fellow Old Masters tell a lot about him in their artworks: how #Cupid brings together humans and gods who could not be more different. As a consequence, joy and sorrow are often close together… 💔 Visit us on #ValentinesDay and let’s look over Cupid’s shoulder in the Picture Gallery: Our 30-minute lunchtime tour (in German) with Claudia Hogl is dedicated to the small but mighty god of love. “Die Macht der Liebe 💘 Amor auf der Spur“ Tuesday, 14 February, 12:30 pm Meeting Point: Entrance Hall
 #KunsthistorischesMuseum #Vienna
Februar, 12:30 Treffpunkt: Eingangsbereich
