I remember when I was afraid to get engaged when I was in my 20s someone told me that I was just afraid of commitment... that as a man that was just normal. I wasn't supposed to run towards love, but rather just surrender. As if it was some sort of life sentence I would need to learn to tolerate.⁠ ⁠ All of that couldn't have been more wrong. I wasn't afraid of commitment, I was afraid that love would hurt me. I didn't trust love, and I didn't trust myself with holding it.⁠ ⁠ Love is not something we learn to tolerate, that's disconnection. We learn to tolerate that we're settling for a love and relationship that we were taught to just "endure". ⁠ ⁠ We've normalized relationships that are "just how it is." Fuck "just how it is." That's the same inherited bullshit where our "self" goes to die and "self-abandonment" thrives.⁠ ⁠ Love doesn't hurt us. People-pleasing hurts us. Pretending everything is okay hurts us. Silencing ourselves hurts us. Having no boundaries hurts us. Not having our own back hurts us. Self-abandonment hurts us.⁠ ⁠ The essence of love liberates. And our work is to feel and be fully liberated as we turn towards the sacred connection that lives between us and another. Liberated love DEMANDS that you be all of you. There is no space for masks. There is no space for self-abandonment. There is no space for the exploitation of power dynamics or the manipulation of one-another.⁠ ⁠ So when you run from love through chasing unavailable people, or lose all of yourself when your relationship ends, or sprint away when someone tells you they love you or choose you or see you, you are being invited to show up and to grow up and to become an adult and a warrior. You are being invited to turn towards your pain so you can turn towards love.
