Note: This story discusses anti-Asian racism. I came to Regina on November 18, 1979. Because we are from Vietnam, I took an escape from Vietnam, from the communist regime. I left Vietnam by boat and spent six days and six nights on the South [China] Sea before we landed in Malaysia. We were the first wave to come to Canada. Do you remember, Pierre Trudeau? He decided to bring 60,000 Vietnamese people from all over refugee camps, to come to Canada. We were the first wave to come here, to come to Canada. And oh my God, the cold. I tell myself, “People living here, why not me?” We learned to live with the cold, and now I love it, the cold … but not too cold! I worked in restaurants, I did the cleaning, the welding, I did everything. I worked days, nights and after 10 years, we had some money. This store, in 1989, [the owners] decided to sell it, and I applied and I got it. I’m not speaking English too much, but they know I like to work, I love to work, and I work hard. I run this business with all my heart. The customers are like friends and we have a beautiful relationship with our customers. They come day, they come night, they come every week. And we make friends with them. We only had one slow month; April 2020 was a little bit slow. But I tell my staff, I say, “When it’s hard times or good times, we work together. Now in hard times, we have to spend it together.” And they stay with me. I don’t close, I don’t cut the food, I don’t cut the product, and I keep everything open from 4:30 in the morning to 11 p.m. even when it’s slow. After that, everything goes better. People rely on me, that I’m still open. I still take care of everything, and they come back. ⬇️ (1/2) - continued in the comments Vuong Pham is the owner of Country Corner Donuts in Regina. “In Vietnam, I grew up in a small community with limited funds that was used towards feeding my family of 11. When I was 12 years old, my sister and her family came home to visit my parents. I saw they were all dressed nicely and asked how they were able to afford these nice clothes. My sister told me it was because her husband was a tailor and he tailored all their clothing. From that moment, I knew I wanted to be a tailor and asked her husband to teach me. I came to Canada in October 1980 as one of the Vietnamese “boat people.” When I arrived in Winnipeg, I had already learned a lot from my brother-in-law but knew I would need to develop my skills to adapt to the Canadian style of clothing. I met Giovanni Lagioia who taught me how to become an even better tailor. I had some friends who encouraged me to open a business of my own despite not knowing much English at the time. I’m so thankful for them, as I wouldn’t be where I am today without their support. Since then, I have developed my skills as a tailor and have built a name for myself in Winnipeg. We took a family trip to Hollywood in 1995. Since then, I had always dreamed about making clothing for movie stars. [In approximately the year] 2000, I received a phone call asking if I could make five suits (jacket, pants, and shirt) in 14 days. At first, I thought they were joking. Then I found out it was for a movie starring Brian Dennehy. That was the first photo taken for my tailor shop wall of fame. Since then, the movie industry has been drawn to the city of Winnipeg and my tailor shop. While tailoring clothing for the movie Capote, I met Catherine Keener. She chatted with me as if we were old friends. I didn’t realize she was an actress until I was fitting her for a costume! She was so kind and I really appreciated that.” (1/2) - ⬇️ continued in the comments Tam Nguyễn is the owner of Tam Custom Tailor in Winnipeg. #GetHelp: "The thing about anxiety is that it comes in phases and it's different for everybody," @shawnmendes told CBC Radio's Tom Power.
