class="content__text" 📈 Exxon, Shell, Chevron and BP made record profits in 2022 as global energy prices soared. But 🇸🇦 state-owned Saudi Aramco has just eclipsed them all with profits of $161bn last year. That's more than all the other 4 oil majors put together. #saudiaramco #shell #bp #oil #gas #exxon #profits #climate #change #green #energy #chevron

class="content__text" 📉 UK greenhouse gas emissions fell by 3.4% in 2022, as coal use dropped to its lowest level since 1757, Carbon Brief analysis finds. ☀️ Although emissions from oil increased, emissions from coal and gas fell, due to strong growth in clean energy, above-average temperatures and record-high fossil fuel prices suppressed demand. ⛏️ The 15% reduction in coal use means UK demand for the fuel is now the lowest it has been for 266 years. The last time coal demand was this low was in 1757, when George II was king. 🇬🇧 UK emissions have now fallen in nine of the past 10 years, even as the economy has grown. The drop in 2022 puts UK emissions 49% below 1990 levels, while the economy has grown 75% over the same period. 📲 Link in bio #emissions #coal #uk #renewables #climatechange

class="content__text" 🚘 New data shows that one in every seven cars sold globally is now an electric vehicle (EV). EVs' share of sales has risen from one-in-70 just five years ago. At the same time, conventional car sales have fallen by a quarter. However, the International Energy Agency warns EV sales are not yet growing fast enough to blunt the rising CO2 impact of sports utility vehicles (SUVs). The 330m SUVs on the world’s roads emit around a billion tonnes of CO2 a year, nearly a third of the total from all cars. #car #EV #electricvehicle #SUV #sportsutilityvehicle #carbondioxide #globalwarming #climatechange #co2

class="content__text" 🇳🇬 Nigeria has the largest economy and population of any country in Africa. It is expected to overtake China to become the world’s second most populous country after India by the end of the century. 🏭 The country’s economy is closely tied to oil and gas exports. Profits from fossil fuels currently account for 93% of Nigeria’s total export revenue. The production of oil and gas in Nigeria has also been linked to steep societal inequalities and environmental disasters. ⚡ Nigeria has one of the highest rates of energy poverty in the world and suffers from chronic power cuts. In the run up to the 2023 general election, the Nigerian government reversed a pledge to end fuel subsidies amid the threat of protests. 📲 Follow the link in bio for Carbon Brief’s UPDATED Nigerian country profile. #Nigeria #greenhousegases #China #US #election #countryprofile #climatechange #oil

class="content__text" ⛰️ The duration of snow cover in the Alps is now 36 days shorter than the long-term average – an “unprecedented” decline over the past 600 years – according to recent research. 🚰 The Alps are Europe’s largest mountain range, stretching from France to Slovenia. They provide as much as 90% of the water to lowland Europe, earning them the moniker “the water towers of Europe”. ⛷️ The Alps are also one of the most popular tourism destinations in the world, attracting 120m visitors every year for activities including skiing, snowboarding, hiking and cycling. 🐐 The lack of winter snow has made international news in recent years, including in 2023 when Alpine resorts were driven to bring in snow by helicopter and offer “alternative entertainment” – such as “hiking with goats” – the New York Times reported. 📲 Link in bio Photo: StockShot / Alamy Stock Photo #alps #skiing #snow #wintersports #snowsports #climatechange #water

class="content__text" ☀️ Renewables will cover almost all of global electricity demand growth out to 2025, becoming the world’s top source of electricity within three years, new figures reveal. 📈 Carbon Brief analysis of figures in the International Energy Agency electricity market report 2023 shows that renewables, combined with resurgent nuclear power, will more than cover growth in electricity demand between 2022 and 2025. ⚡ This means clean-energy sources will start displacing fossil fuels. As a result, global power-sector carbon dioxide emissions will plateau or decline, despite rapidly rising demand. 📲 Read more through the link in bio #renewables #energy #fossilfuels #oil #gas #shell #BP #exxon #chevron #total #green

class="content__text" 🔥The big oil-and-gas companies have done very well out of the energy crisis. 📈 After Russia's invasion of Ukraine sent fossil fuel prices skyrocketing last year, BP, Chevron, Shell and ExxonMobil have all reported their highest ever annual profits. 💰The world's five largest oil and gas companies reported earnings of $158.8bn in 2022. 🌎 That's equivalent to $220 for each of the 719 million people still living in extreme poverty today. #BP #Shell #Chevron #Exxon #climatechange #oil #gas #fossilfuels #exxonmobil

class="content__text" ☀️ Wind and solar supplied more of the EU’s electricity than any other power source for the first time ever in 2022, new analysis finds. ⚡ They together provided a record one-fifth of the EU’s electricity in 2022 – a larger share than gas or nuclear, according to a report by the climate thinktank @emberclimate . 💨 Record additions of new wind and solar in 2022 helped Europe survive a “triple crisis” created by restrictions on Russian gas supplies, a dip in hydro caused by drought and unexpected nuclear outages, the analysis says. 📈 Wind and solar growth is expected to continue this year, while hydro and nuclear generation is likely to recover. As a result, fossil fuel power generation could drop by an unprecedented 20% in 2023 – double the previous record observed in 2020, the analysis projects.
