class="content__text" Coming soon: over the summer months, three important bronze sculptures by Copenhagen-based artist Tal R will be on view in the canalside garden of Palazzo Experimental, Dorsoduro, Venice. Sculpture has long been an integral part of Tal R's practice. For the artist, its presence — material and metaphorical — has led to an extended consideration of things we might label as 'objects' exerting themselves in the shared physical realm of an exhibition space as 'beings'. The figurative sculptures on view in the tranquil canalside garden of Palazzo Experimental are among the most complete expression of this career-long impulse. On view 18 May–27 August - Image: Tal R, Bow and Arrow, 2019. Installation view, Victoria Miro garden, London, 2022. Patinated bronze. 177 x 96 x 46 cm, 69 3/4 x 37 3/4 x 18 1/8 in © Tal R. class="content__text" Now extended: Kudzanai-Violet Hwami's solo exhibition at Victoria Miro will be on view until Saturday 20 May.⠀ ⠀ Comprising paintings in dialogue with large-scale wall-based and suspended photographic images, A Making of Ghosts reflects on aspects of grief and the action of memory, unfolding as the viewer moves through the gallery space.⠀ ⠀ The artist invited Ruvimbo Gumbochuma to write two poems reflecting on aspects of the exhibition and its themes. These are presented as stacks of posters in the gallery; visitors are invited to take a poster away with them, subject to availability. Those unable to visit the gallery in person may read the poems via our website.⠀ ⠀ -⠀ Images: Kudzanai-Violet Hwami, Many faces on Jupiter, 2023. class="content__text" Now on view at Victoria Miro → Isaac Julien: Once Again… (Statues Never Die) – Photographs. The new photographic works on view include Orisa's Return, inspired by the writings of the novelist, playwright and Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka. Orisa is an African spirit who has a key role in the Yoruba religion. In his book Beyond Aesthetics, Soyinka looks at the politics and aesthetics of collecting African art. The figure in Orisa's Return symbolises a curator, a keeper, someone with a relationship to the spiritual objects. The work is also about the alienation effect, the clinical gaze, as all of the objects that have been taken are labelled and either displayed in glass vitrines or kept in storage. - Image: Isaac Julien, Orisa's Return (Once Again... class="content__text" In the context of her latest exhibition, A Making of Ghosts, the digital and physical processes that Kudzanai-Violet Hwami employs — splice, repetition, overlay, changes of scale and medium, in addition to the free play of imagination — are intrinsically linked to ideas of proximity in time and space, and how images and their accompanying narratives are endlessly constructed and reconstructed, living within us and beyond us.⠀ ⠀ Final week — on view at Victoria Miro until Saturday 13 May.⠀ ⠀ -⠀ Images: Installation views, Kudzanai-Violet Hwami: A Making of Ghosts, 14 April–13 May 2023. class="content__text" Painted on silk, Emma Talbot's works in our new online presentation are united by the theme of 'Magical Thinking' — an idea which the artist describes as 'encapsulating the ways in which humans have used the imaginary to understand and to describe their place in the world... It has been present in human culture since the earliest times, for example as the foundation of myths, symbols and culture.'
