Wetland waddle: A pair of one-horned rhinos wallowing in the first wave of flood water in the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Morigaon district of Assam. Belated floods have affected five districts in Assam, temporarily displacing over 20,000 people and forcing 770 of them to take shelter in relief camps, officials said. They say that the Brahmaputra and some of its tributaries were flowing above the danger mark at certain stretches. A breach in the river embankment caused much of the damage in Bongaigaon district. 📸 Ritu Raj Konwar

On August 2, 2021, the wild elephant, Rivaldo, who had been in captivity for around three months in the buffer zone of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu, was freed. On the day he was released, Rivaldo, walked over 28 km overnight to return to his home in the Sigur forest range in MTR. Local residents claimed that his return was a “failure” of the Forest Department’s efforts to rehabilitate him. However, recent images show Rivaldo feeding and bonding with other elephants in the area. These bonds with other elephants could explain his insistence on returning to the Sigur range. Rivaldo also wears a collar from Germany to enable the Forest Department to monitor his movement. The collar has GPS and VHF transmitters inbuilt, with a three-year collar life battery backup. 📸 Sathyamoorthy M. & Special Arrangement

A weaver baya bird is seen at its newly built nest on a wayside palm tree in outskirts of Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Farmers in Odisha’s Ganjam district have been receiving unusual requests from conservationists to not cut down thorny trees such as palm, date and babul although they have “lesser” economic value. Conservationists are worried that felling and uprooting of these trees spell doom for the Baya weaver, a nesting bird. Baya weavers often build their nests in thorny trees near water or hanging over water, where predators cannot reach easily. The nests are compactly woven with strips of paddy leaves, rough-edged grass, and twigs. The nests have a long, vertical, pipe-like entrance. 📸 Biswaranjan Rout

Masters of the art of papier-mâché have, for centuries, striven to bring to life the literary works of poets, Iranian kings and Mughal emperors using their art. Today, one can still find papier-mâché artisans in the narrow bylanes of Srinagar’s Zadibal-Alamgari Bazaar. One such award-winning 'paper mache' artist, Maqbool Jan is known for his innovative patterns. Depictions of Kashmir’s flora and fauna are the big draw for buyers across the globe. But Maqbool Jan's latest project is to make a map of Srinagar city on cloth by using papier-mâché techniques. He wants to see this masterpiece, which he has been working on for over a year, displayed in the Indian Parliament.

A man dressed as Mahatma Gandhi, out on the streets after attending the Independence Day event in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. ‘Nation First, Always First’ is the theme of India’s 75th Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation. For the first time ever, flower petals were showered as the National Flag was hoisted by the Prime Minister by two Mi 17 1V helicopters of the IAF in Amrut Formation. Similar to last year, the celebrations were subdued with fewer people invited to attend the event. COVID-19 guidelines and protocol were put in place at the Red Fort with guests and attendees seated at six-feet from each other. #independenceday 📸 Biswaranjan Rout
