class="content__text" Today marks what would have been the icon that is Elizabeth Taylor’s 91st birthday.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We here from Terry O’Neill on how the stars aligned when he introduced the screen legend to another celestial one-of-a-kind…⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ “I was in Los Angeles and one day the phone rang. It was Elizabeth Taylor. I’d worked with Elizabeth a decade previously and we became friends, friendly enough for her to ask me for a favour. ‘I’d like to meet David Bowie, can you arrange that?’ Imagine that - one of the biggest Hollywood stars of all time wanting to meet David Bowie. When Elizabeth Taylor asks you to do something, you don’t say no. I made a few calls, and a date and time were arranged.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ “We decided to meet at the famed director George Cukor’s home. Cukor was planning on working with Elizabeth on an upcoming film and I think she was interested in speaking to David about a possible role. Elizabeth certainly had a reputation for keeping people waiting, but on this day she was well matched. After an hour went by, I could tell her patience was waning. After another few hours he finally arrived. Any anger was quickly dismissed and they laughed like old pals. Of course I had my camera - I wasn’t going to miss this meeting. And you can see in these poses, which Elizabeth overly directed, there was chemistry between them. He didn’t get the role, if it was even on the table, but they did become lifelong friends.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ “I was one of the lucky ones when it came to David Bowie. He was kind and always a gentleman. class="content__text" As a close friend of Terry O’Neill, Iconic Images’ President Robin Morgan observed the special relationship between the photographer and perhaps his favourite subject, his friend and muse Raquel Welch.⁣ ⁣ “Raquel and Terry were close friends for over 50 years, from when he photographed her at Borehamwood Studios during the making of One Million Years B.C. in 1966, right up to six years ago, when she opened his final exhibition in Beverly Hills. We all went out to dinner after the show, and they walked down Rodeo Drive arm in arm. ⁣ ⁣ Terry adored her. He always said she was more like the girl next door than the sex symbol she portrayed. She was multi-talented — a great singer and dancer — but rarely had the roles to show it off.⁣ ⁣ I had dinner with her in Beverly Hills a few years ago and we talked about how they worked together on so many movies and shoots. She always asked for Terry because she trusted him. One bad photograph could put the brakes on a movie star’s career — but she always felt secure, she said, with Terry behind the camera.”⁣ ⁣ Pictured: Terry O’Neill, Raquel Welch and designer Stephen Reid. Throughout an illustrious career, Welch captivated audiences with her fiery charisma, fierce talent and stunning beauty. One of the defining relationships of Welch’s career was her friendship with Terry O’Neill. The pair met in 1966, on the set of Welch’s film ‘One Million Years B.C.’, and worked together many times in the decades that followed, on shoots that captured the star at the height of her magnetic beauty. The collaboration was fuelled by a deep mutual respect and admiration. “The camera loves her. Well, everyone loves her!” O’Neill said of Welch in his later years. “Our friendship has lasted so long because, besides being a very talented actress, she’s just a wonderful person, clearly gorgeous, with a heart of gold. She’s a classy lady, and doesn’t get nearly the credit she deserves as an actress. She’s also an excellent cabaret performer—she’s got a great voice.” For her part, Welch recalled, “I’d never liked being photographed… until I started working with Terry. He introduced me, at just the right time, to what I needed most: to interact with the lensman.
