Martyn recalls, "So when I arrived at the studio for the first photo session for record company Chrysalis, one of many planned for the week, I could sense a tense atmosphere. As a photographer, shooting in the studio was alwaya a problem on a technical level with period camera equipment and film stock, in what were very dark functional spaces. Additionally, one had to work round the process of recording a record. It was soon evident that Blondie, and Debbie Harry in particular, were having issues with record producer Mike Chapman. The band's New York punk heritage clashed with Chapman's quest for West Coast-style perfection". class="content__text" Happy 55th Birthday to Thom Yorke! This photograph was taken by Kevin Westenberg in Amsterdam, May 2006 during a cover shoot for Mojo Magazine. Kevin recalls, "An exciting prospect to be able to shoot Thom on his own after working with the whole band many times. This was shot in Amsterdam at a large sound stage there that I never even knew existed before. As usual, I just made it up as I went along and found various bits of lighting around at the sound stage. The cover that MOJO chose was actually a noir style moody B&W rather than any colour image. class="content__text" Kevin Westenberg took this wonderful shot of PJ Harvey for NME Magazine on this day in 2000. Kevin recalls, "Originally taken for the NME way back in prime time. One of those magic days that come along even once in a while. Polly showed up to the location on her own. When that happened over the course of prime time, this would always endear me immediately to the artist. Makes the process much simpler and focused. She was always so cool, so kind, and giving as well. I personally think she’s the greatest singer to ever come out of the UK. I wanted to represent her in a moodier way than she had been before. We gave her the full fashion treatment – she brought her own dresses and her own make-up artist. I kept the lighting soft in the spirit of the moment. I always had a lot of time for Polly so I wanted her to look as great as possible. This was a softer side to her – a bit of a fantasy version. We also were given a great deal of time to get all of the details having to do with the lighting, make-up, and photos right. A bright moment of alignment". We’re looking forward to seeing her at The Roundhouse on Friday. This print is featured in our current exhibition ‘In the Moment:The Art of Music Photography’ that’s on display at the Barbican Music Library. Steve recalls, "We'd been doing shots around Saõ Paolo all afternoon when Nick suddenly went, "I know this place with a really great view of the city. Only thing is you have to buy a Caipreña before they'll let you out on the balcony." Well no problem there! The only thing was, as we found out at the top of the long elevator ride, this establishment had rather large delusions of grandeur and refused entry to anyone in shorts. No, Nick was wearing long trousers but I was not. With the light fading fast I raced to the nearest clothing store, literally threw the money at them and told them to keep the change as I stripped to my pants and put on the trousers there and then.
