They were so named because the style was thought to have originated in Kraków, the then capital of Poland. Also known as poulaines or pikes that referred to the long pointed beak of the shoe, not the shoe itself, this footwear gained popularity in Europe at different times, first appearing in the archaeological record in the 12th century and falling in and out of fashion periodically. They reached their most exaggerated form in the third quarter of the 15th century before falling out of fashion in the 1480s. class="content__text" Within the range of African art there is little consideration for architecture; this is a consequence of the non-durability of the used materials such as adobe. The thousands of small village mosques are reconstructed with mud each April in an epic one-day event called the Crépissage (Plastering). The structures require annual reinforcement – as do the town's traditional adobe homes – before Mali's brief-yet-brutal rainy season, which mostly occurs in July and August, when almost the entire average 1,000mm annual rainfall descends. This immense undertaking ensures that the mosques will survive the rainy season, despite altering in shape ever so slightly each year. Not only is the Crépissage an important act of maintenance designed to protect the mosques’ walls from cracking and crumbling, but it's also a festival that celebrates community, faith and heritage. Introduction of modern building materials and techniques are gradually replacing these raw earth architectures that require regular maintenance and thereby the shared history of the continent.
