class="content__text" Posted @withrepost • @questlove This album marks the end of what I call the #ElectricLadyResidency: we came to the house of Hendrix in 96 to work on #Voodoo & never left. In between we worked on classic after classic after classic (Things Fall/Roots Come Alive/Phrenology/Like Water For Choc/First Born Second/Everybody’s Got Their Something/Mama’s Gun/Fantastic Vol 2 & like a gazillion other projects I can’t remember at 8am right now. It’s not like I stopped using it (well it’s not like any of us “stopped per se” but on a consistent basis/day in day out constant sleepover magic made all the time period? Then I say this is where the parenthesis ends) Back then one could say in 2003 this felt like the asterisk or blemish of the period cause it was too ahead of it’s time (“too weird” “too experimental” “too soft” “too pretentious” “too out there” “trying too hard” “too emo” “too futuristic” “doin too much”) even the avalanche of his Be followup was a reactionary praise of the backlash against Circus (“whew we thought you fell off with that last album yo…glad to see that you still got it 🤨”) Funny what a difference 20 years makes: now a new generation is sayin how life changing this jawn was & how futuristic and ahead of it’s time it was and how played now it sounds like we made this last week. We had one rule: get out our comfort zone & do the opposite of what we been doin (funny how I did this to my own life and got astounding results—-I suggest y’all do the same) I first learned via this album one can heal the past: yesterday’s life fail can morph into tomorrow’s life victory. Applies to my life & this album. The combined years of experience between these extraordinary musicians, as well as their contributions to the art form, is really something special to see and hear all on one stage.
