 Details 🤩

Sharks have specific pigmentation to help them camouflage called counter shading. This is when the shark is dark on the top, dorsal side, and lighter on their underside, or ventral side.

Countershading helps them to blend in with the darkness of the ocean bottom when viewed from above and vice versa.

Shark skin is composed of dermal denticles; tiny tooth-shaped plaques along their bodies. Making them hydrodynamic, meaning that they move through the water very efficiently.

Shark skin can become “tanner” if they spend more time at the surface because it contains the pigment melanin that increases in direct response to radiation.

Many of our local sharks also have scarring that looks very bright on their bodies and could interrupt their countershading. Usually scarring is caused by boat strikes or confrontations with other sharks.

We use all these characteristics and more to identify and name sharks for our Photo ID System. You can even adopt your own shark and name it based off of its unique characteristics!
