At the center of this image is a massive star 200,000 times brighter than the Sun 🌟 Though it may look like a serene cosmic landscape, the Lagoon Nebula is full of turbulent gasses, roaring stellar winds, and intense radiation emanating from a massive star. Not even cosmic dust could dull this shine ✨ Nestled in the equator of the Milky Way’s pearly disk, crowded with thick cosmic gas, dark dust, and glowing stars that obscure our view, lies the Hidden Galaxy captured by @NASAHubble . At a relatively bright 8.4 magnitude, this would be one of the brightest galaxies in our night sky – if it were not obscured by so much interstellar dust. This spiral galaxy located approximately 11 million light years from Earth displays intertwined tendrils of dust in spectacular arms that fan around a brilliant core of hot gas and stars. The core of this galaxy is a specific type of region where atomic hydrogen has been ionized. Regions such as this are known to be energetic birthplace of stars, where thousands of stars can form over a couple million years. Psst. Wanna see a total lunar eclipse? 🌞🌎🌗 On May 15, Earth will pass between the Sun and the Moon, blocking sunlight and casting a shadow on the lunar surface. The result: a Moon that looks like it's blushing because everybody is gawking at it. Starting at 9:32 p.m. EDT (1:32 UTC on May 16), people with clear skies in the Americas, Europe, and parts of Africa will begin to see the Moon get bathed in the red glow of every sunrise and sunset refracted through Earth’s atmosphere. We all know Earth is beautiful. Imagine looking at the swirling blue marble from above. Astronaut Jessica Watkins is doing that in this photo taken about 250 miles (402 kilometers) above the planet. A geologist, @Astro_Watkins is part of the 2017 class of @NASAAstronauts . On April 27, 2022, she launched to the @ISS on her first spaceflight with crewmates Bob Hines, Kjell Lindgren, and @EuropeanSpaceAgency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti on NASA’s @SpaceX Crew-4 mission. To boldly go, we must boldly grow 🌱 For the first time ever, researchers have grown the hardy and well-studied plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, in samples of the lunar surface material known as regolith. In the early days of space age, Apollo astronauts collected regolith and brought it back to Earth where they could be studied with state-of-the-art equipment and saved for future research not yet imagined. Fifty years later, at the dawn of the @NASAArtemis era, samples collected on the Apollo 11, 12, and 17 missions have been used to successfully grow plants in the nutrient poor lunar regolith. Scientists at the @UFlorida@UFIFAS_Solutions made the breakthrough discovery decades in the making. Which started with two questions: Whether plants can grow in regolith, and second, how might that one day help humans have an extended stay on the Moon. With a resounding yes to the first question, the team hopes to go on to answer the second question as well, paving the way for future astronauts to someday grow more nutrient-rich plants on the Moon and thrive in deep space. As time GOES by. 🛰 A little more than 22,000 miles (34,000 kilometers) above Earth, the newest @NOAA Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) has released its first photos. Locked in a geostationary orbit, GOES-18 covers the same section of Earth – over the western contiguous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America and the Pacific Ocean. The GOES satellites are the most advanced weather-monitoring satellites in the Western Hemisphere; they provide high-resolution imagery, atmospheric measurements, and lightning maps of our home planet, all in real-time, and monitor space weather with enhanced solar imaging and an upgraded magnetometer - which measures magnetic field variations. Maybe it’s time ⭐️   @NASAHubble captured this image of a starburst spiral galaxy around 80 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo.

This galaxy is experiencing intense star formation, likely due to the gravitational forces of neighboring galaxies; astronomers refer to galaxies that form stars rapidly as starburst galaxies. The creation of these stars is causing some peculiar galactic weather – known as a superwind – gigantic movements of gas throughout the galaxy, which is invisible in this picture due to it not being on visible wavelengths imaged by Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3.

Take a good look: this is the black hole at the center of our galaxy. This groundbreaking image of Sagittarius A* was taken by the @ehtelescope team with data from telescopes around the world. After the EHT's iconic image of M87*, released in 2019, this is only the second time a supermassive black hole has been directly observed with its shadow. The gas in the glowing orange ring surrounds the black hole's event horizon, a boundary from which nothing can escape. The ring is created by light bending in the intense gravity around Sagittarius A*, which has a mass some four million times greater than our Sun. The second image, which takes a wider look at the space around Sagittarius A*, includes data contributed by several NASA missions. The orange specks and purple tendrils were captured in infrared light by @nasahubble , and the blue clouds represent data from our orbiting @nasachandraxray observatory. Florals? In space? Groundbreaking 🌸

Happy #MothersDay from all of us at NASA. Orbiting 260 miles above our home planet comes with some pretty spectacular views, but life aboard the @ISS is missing some of the creature comforts of home like a breeze, pizza or the sound of a gentle rainstorm.

Grown in 2015 by current #Crew4 astronaut @astro_kjell , these zinnias were some of the first flowers to bloom in space. Growing plants can provide a nice reprieve from other experiments conducted on the orbiting laboratory—all of which help us learn about our planet, understand our place amongst the stars, and guide us towards new frontiers.

Spitzer walked so Webb could run 👟 The Spitzer Space Telescope, NASA’s infrared Great Observatory, provided high-resolution images of the infrared universe, which paved the way for the James Webb Space Telescope (@NASAWebb ). As Webb continues final instrument calibrations and prepares for the release of the first images in the upcoming weeks, these images from the mirror alignment process give us a preview of Webb’s power. Compare these two images captured of the same view of a portion of the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small irregular galaxy near our own. Webb’s MIRI instrument brings the details we see in the Spitzer image into sharper focus. Webb’s image reveals tendrils of interstellar gas in unprecedented detail. Try this for size: The most important component of a telescope is its primary mirror. The larger the mirror, the more light it can collect, and the smaller, dimmer, and more distant objects it can detect. Webb’s mirror boasts an area almost 45 times greater than Spitzer’s. With great power, comes great responsibility 🕸 @NASAHubble captured a supernova remnant (SNR) 160,000 light-years from Earth, rupturing the ambient gas clouds around the former star. SNRs play a vital role in our understanding of the universe, as they can both create the building blocks of our universe and change its ecology. Supernovas are the last hurrah of a massive dying star; they occur when the star's fuel runs out. The immense gravitational forces cause the star to collapse so quickly that it explodes.
