class="content__text" Views of the modernist poolhouse of a Shingle-style cottage on Martha’s Vineyard, one of my favorites in architect Tom Kligerman’s latest book, “Shingle and Stone,” from @monacellipress . In his preface, Tom describes sunlight on the East Coast as being “multidimensional, especially at the seashore, where it is reflected by the ocean, softened by dunes, and diffused by the moist air”—a lovely reminder that the seductive days of summer are on their way. The book, beautifully written with @mrmitchowens , is one of Tom’s first projects since forming his eponymous firm, Kligerman Architecture + Design. Tom, and my longtime friends from Ike Kligerman Barkley, his former partners, @john.ike and @joelbarkleyarchitect , are each working on exciting new ventures—can’t wait to see what’s next for all. class="content__text" The colonnade at San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts the other evening, which capped off an amazing day with one of my nephews. Architect @leemindel said it was a must-see, and I realized I’d never been. Though impressive during the day, it was otherworldly—if not rather eerie—at night. The lagoon, classical colonnade, and a gorgeous rotunda are part of a historic monumental installation designed by celebrated SF architect Bernard Maybeck for the 1915 Panama-Pacific exhibition. After falling into disrepair, the site was reconstructed in the 1960s and ‘70s and then restored and seismically retrofitted in the early 2000s; it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. class="content__text" Museum fashion exhibitions rarely thrill me as much as art, design, or architecture, but the dazzling “Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy” show at San Francisco’s @legionofhonor museum is so breathtakingly beautiful that it’s a challenge to absorb it all in one visit. @guopei ’s creations are spectacular—truly magical and otherworldly—and the show has been extended through late November, with tickets sold for timed viewings. class="content__text" Robert Kime, the brilliant and beloved designer and one of the legendary aesthetes of our time, passed this week. Our hearts are filled with sorrow. Robert created extraordinary, inspiring interiors—always with a wonderful, intriguing patina; enchanting color; a sense of timeworn beauty. What I’ll remember most vividly is not their grandeur but their grace. His own words, in snippets from a lovely @houseandgardenuk column on collecting, capture him well: “My philosophy around collecting is simply being open and interested. . . the things I collect become a part of the story, the fabric of the rooms, which are not based on a system of perfection, but on liveability and comfort. You might have something modest next to something grand, each collected, but together they say something special. . .Collecting is, as always, about surrounding yourself with things that you love; things that somehow speak to you. This is my very simple way of thinking and talking about living and putting rooms together and about collecting too. I can see myself in what I collect. class="content__text" There’s something so lush and languid about late-afternoon shadows and lingering sunlight, here filtered through the trees at @theglasshouse_newcanaan —a photo that made my heart skip a beat when it popped into my IG feed the other day. It reminded me of my family home in New Canaan, which was not far away, sited in exactly the same position atop the next ridge to the east; a house with scant architectural merit but equally beautiful sunsets. I’m on the Glass House Advisory Council and love my regular visits to the 49-acre property—a treasure that’s just an hour from NYC and an easy trip. Tours—group, self-guided, or private—are available through mid-November; tickets and detailed info about the house, painting and sculpture galleries, architectural follies, and landscape are available at theglasshouse.org. When I was growing up, Philip Johnson still lived at the GH, and though it was opened to the public in 2007, time flew and my first visit wasn’t until a private tour with friends in 2011. It was a brisk, late-October day and forecast snow flurries turned into a legendary nor’easter/blizzard that blanketed the GH landscape (and the East Coast) during the few hours we were there. I'll never forget still-leafy limbs from trees throughout the property tragically breaking from the weight of the heavy snow, creating booming sounds like gunshots that echoed through the gusting wind. It was a hauntingly beautiful and truly spectacular introduction to this architectural icon, though I recommend a bit less drama!
