Whether they are in an intimate relationship with you or a friend or another family member, they are the ones that love you so much that they know every single birth preference of yours. They know them all & they know the WHY behind the choice. I’ll never forget someone saying to Dave when I was pregnant for the first time that he’d never feel so useless in his life. Well that my friends is so untrue. Dave was the most useful person in my pregnancy & birth space. Your birth partner deserves to know why you are choosing what you are choosing to do when it comes to your pregnancy & birth of your baby. And should be supported to support you in those decisions. They are the ones who have the voice when you are at your most vulnerable at 37-42 weeks when you are being met with talks about admissions, inductions, extra monitoring, interventions & guess birth dates. They are the ones who will hold you (& your bump) up when you may feel beaten down in your birth preferences by someone who doesn’t agree with them or when they don’t conform to the ‘guide’lines or policies. They are your rock. Your hip squeezer. Your hand holder. Your thirst quencher. Your counter pressure. Your rebozo holder. Your face caresser. Your cheer-leader. And potentially your baby catcher. They fuckin rock & that’s why they need to get educated too. To be all of these & more & to feel proud that they did everything in their power to support you in birthing your baby Earthside. That’s why we chose to do @mama.doula Shelly‘s @gentlebirthofficial course together & @pamjdpilates course together. Not alone. You should not be alone in the most magical & vulnerable time of your life. Find your rock, whoever it may be that you trust & that TRUSTS you. And ask them to learn & to grow with you growing your baby. They’ll be thrilled & realise that they don’t have to feel useless on the day. Happy valentines day birth partners! Take a bow! (Maybe you're a doula or midwife and your client just received this news). These changes can knock you off balance emotionally and leave parents reeling - trying to salvage what you can to make this the best birth possible. There is something you can do for yourself today. The practice of self-compassion meditations is associated with so many positive benefits it's hard to list them all here. In these circumstances self-compassion practices help parents to to let go of specific goals more easily and re-engage with new goals with more positive emotions. Self-compassion meditations are a buffer to negative emotional states - and take only a few minutes. Self-compassion training engages the soothing network of the brain (oxytocin) and is a specific mindfulness training. Think of mindfulness as training for the mind and compassion practices as training for the heart.
