class="content__text" Recently, the Reef Authority was joined by 22 Traditional Owners representing 11 TUMRA (Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreements) groups - from Sea Country between Cape York and the southern region of the #GreatBarrierReef. Welcomed onto Byellee Country (@heronisland ) by Uncle Mick Eggmolesse, these TUMRA groups engaged in knowledge sharing workshops, story-telling and yarning circles to discuss their individual journeys within the program, and to pave the way to walk together towards joint management of the Reef. Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreements are community-based plans for managing traditional resources. These plans, which are accredited in legislation, have proved a successful mechanism for joint management of the Reef. We would like to thank all of the mobs who came together, on Country, to share their expertise, wisdom, and enduring connections that have informed the guardianship of the Reef for millennia. This allows for the Reef Authority, and our partners at @qldparks , to connect, share and continue to build these relationships to enable better protection for the Land and Sea Country. #TUMRA #NAIDOCWeek #NAIDOC2023 #LovetheReef

class="content__text" From little things, slightly bigger things grow! These Anemone fish eggs can be laid in clutches of 100-1000, and a carefully protected by their folks. The female will lay such large numbers as the majority of these eggs won’t make it to adulthood. 🎥 @dive_down_under finding the next generation of Nemo’s in @tropicalnorthqueensland #seethereef #lovethereef #protectthereef #queensland #australia

class="content__text" Today, we welcome NAIDOC Week. The NAIDOC values are to be celebrated, acknowledged and respected every week, not just this week. NAIDOC Week is a time to come together - for all Australians - to collectively recognize our pasts, while standing together for a brighter and stronger future - for all Australians and for our Land and Sea Country. This is a time to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year, the theme is ‘For our Elders’. Across every generation, First Nation’s Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. The Reef Authority is proud to celebrate the incredible work, and the enduring connection our First Nation’s staff and partners have with their Land and Sea Country, and their willingness to share their stories and their wisdom, so we can walk together to protect this precious resource for future generations. #NAIDOC2023 #ForOurElders #NAIDOCWeek #ReefAuthority #LovetheReef

It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.” @davidattenborough This is why we all long to #SeetheReef. Why we #LovetheReef. class="content__text" From the @southerngreatbarrierreef to @tropicalnorthqueensland , 26 marine tourism operators have been engaging in the Tourism Reef Protection Initiative to help protect their patch of @gbrmarinepark . 🪸 The Initiative aims to engage these operators and their staff - who know their high value tourism Reef’s better than anyone - to delivery Reef protection services and further enhance their site stewardship actions. By delivering #EyeontheReef surveys, controlling coral eating predator species and delivering restoration activities, these operators not only protect their patch of #GreatBarrierReef, but also provide vital data to the Reef Authority while upskilling and empowering their crew. As we reach the half way point of this Initiative, stay tuned as we bring you updates from the length and breadth of the World Heritage Area. 🎥 @alwaysunderwater__ doing her bit with @oceansafaricapetrib . class="content__text" Octopus antics 🐙 Unlike other cephalopods, the Day octopus feeds in sunlight hours. This is helped by its incredible ability to morph to mimic textures and colours of surrounding habitats. 🎥 @sjthisway at @ladyelliotislandecoresort on the @southerngreatbarrierreef #SeetheReef #LovetheReef #ProtecttheReef #SouthernGreatBarrierReef #Queensland #Australia

class="content__text" "We've had a busy 6 months undertaking a wide variety of site stewardship and management activities, all part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park's Tourism Reef Protection Initiative. This program ensures that high standard tourism operators have the support they need to keep their sites sustainable, educate their guests, provide traditional owners access to country, and work with stakeholders to promote the conservation of this amazing World Heritage Area." The Tourism Reef Protection Initiative is empowering the marine tourism industry to further develop these stewardship actions, while also allowing those who know their high-value tourism sites best to actively engage in #EyeontheReef survey methods and coral eating predators control to help protect their patch. class="content__text" Sleepy Sunday’s in @tropicalnorthqueensland . While this may just look like a lazy yawning fish, this male Common Lionfish uses its spines in a visual display to intimidate their rival males, while attracting potential mates. With the ability to lay up to two million eggs per year, and spawning year round, no wonder this guy needs a good yawn. 🎥 @pablocogollos_photography in @tropicalnorthqueensland #GreatBarrierReef #MasterReefGuides #Queensland #Travel #Australia

class="content__text" How do you #LovetheReef? 💙 Whether you’re on the doorstep of the #GreatBarrierReef or half a world away, we each have a responsibility to preserve and protect this natural wonder for future generations. But like many coral reef ecosystems around the world, the @gbrmarinepark is under pressure from many things, including climate change. 🎥 larajayne_travels soaring over one of @queensland ’s icons, #HeartReef of the @whitsundaysqld . #LoveWhitsundays #ThisisQueensland #SeeAustralia
