Link in bio, thanks.), I'm taking a look back at some of the photos I created last year. I've hosted my "Shoot From the Pit" live concert photography workshops at nearly 100 Luke Combs' shows since the beginning of 2019. It's something I'm genuinely passionate about because the photo business had been good to me for more than 30 years and it's a way for me to give back while offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I'm teaching the next generation of photographers not only shutter speeds and apertures, but how to act in the photo pit and how to separate your work from everyone else's. Last year, my workshop attendees came to iconic venues including Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Madison Square Garden. But then we did shows at four football stadiums and here is the lucky group that got to spend the day at Lumen Field in Seattle, WA. This year we're doing 16 stadiums in North America and I'm running workshops at all of them. Link in bio, thanks!), I'm taking a look back at some of the photos I created last year. In April, Luke Combs was headlining the main stage at the Tortuga Music Festival in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The event is right on the beach and they have multiple stages with artists at all levels of their career. A good friend of mine is the manager for a very talented husband-and-wife duo named Kat and Alex. In their bio, it says that the couple are re-writing the rules of classic country music by adding a Latin twist. You don't hear country music in Spanish too often, and these two are forging the path! Along with their band, the two put on a great show for a packed crowd of fans. With 70,000 people behind me during CMA Fest at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Luke Combs decided to sing a line from his last song of the night, “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” just a few inches in front of my lens. In a situation like this, all you can do is try to keep the framing right and blast away. Sometimes I’ll mount a remote camera in the lighting trusses during load in. But when it’s a festival show, the stage setup happens long before we arrive in town. One of the best parts of filming my bi-weekly "Ask David Bergman" video series for AdoramaTV is that I get to work with some awesome people, including my friend and incredible musician Archie Peña. We met on the Gloria Estefan tour quite a few years ago, and he has played percussion on many songs you've heard, including almost everything from Shakira. His list of accolades is long, but I got him to come hang with me in the studio to do a video about using flare in photographs. Link in bio, thanks!), I'm taking a look back at some of the photos I created last year. This image looks deceptively simple, but was one of the harder photos for me to get during Luke Combs' time in Seattle last year. During sound check, I saw that there was a giant Luke flag on the other side of the stadium. I visualized an image with Luke and the flag in the same frame. I put the camera on the ground to try and get the two elements lined up properly. Simple, right? Not so fast. There wasn't much wind, so most of the time the flag was laying flat and you couldn't read it. Also, Luke didn't stand still during sound check. He constantly walked back and forth across the massive stadium stage. I couldn't chase him because of the low camera angle, so I stayed in place and used the flip-out screen on my Canon EOS R3 to move a few inches left and right as needed. I spent most of the time during sound check on the floor trying to get one moment with Luke singing and the flag unfurled, all lined up at the perfect angle. In October, I was commissioned by Steven Page (formerly of Barenaked Ladies) to photograph his trio opening for The Who in New York. I'll post a photo of Steven and the guys soon, but after their set, The Who's production team (with an assist from @lorengold ) allowed me to photograph the living legends on stage. I made this image of Roger Daltrey at the beginning of "Love Reign O'er Me." Luke Combs' first performance of 2022 was in front of 100,000 people at the Daytona 500 - with another nine million watching on TV. I was able to make this frame during sound check early in the day before the crowd arrived. The Luke Combs tour finally made his way back to Europe in March 2022, two years after the C2C Festival shut down because, well, it was March 2020. For this show at the O2 Arena in London, NONE of our gear made it as it was held up in customs in another country. Our amazing crew pulled off the impossible by renting everything from drums and guitars, to audio gear and cables in about a half day. Link in bio, thanks!), I'm taking a look back at some of the photos I created last year. Besides my work on tour in 2022, I also moved into a new studio space in midtown Manhattan. I'm mostly using it to shoot my bi-weekly video series teaching photography on the Adorama YouTube channel. It's called "Ask David Bergman," and I respond to photo questions sent in by viewers. I'm also using the space to work with models, actors, and musicians (reach out if you want to collaborate!). In October, @ericalynnnyc graced the studio for a shoot. She's a triple-threat who's always prepared, and we created some images for an AskDB question about creating contrasty photos on a white background. With a series of lights, v-flats, and an acrylic sheet, I showed some techniques to make this image.
