class="content__text" 'Pink is always in danger of trying too hard, as if a thin coat of pink paint or pink-dyed fabric is enough to make something happy, or genuinely joyous.' - David Campany Anastasia Samoylova @anasamoylova has photographed a variety of pinks in Florida. They express the inherent tension of the so-called Sunshine State with its colorful facades, painted pink to give it a makeover while the region is at risk for flooding and at the forefront of the climate crisis. class="content__text" #artbookfriday — @danielgordonstudio NEW CANVAS Daniel Gordon cuts, builds, experiments and photographs. Like a painter or sculptor, he has an intense studio practice. He imagines and creates his images from scratch, literally and figuratively. His monograph 'New Canvas' focuses on both Gordon's final works and the process that leads to the end result, by emphasizing on the different layers that compose his photographs. class="content__text" No heartbreaks at C/O Berlin! Happy Valentine's Day to you from the number one dating location in Berlin 💖 Back in 1915, this building in Kenansville, Florida opened under the name Piney Woods Inn. In 1955, James W. Webb bought the building, fixed it up, and painted it red. Webb reportedly said that he had heard kids calling it 'the Heartbreak' because of its rundown state, and the new name stuck. It is rumored to have inspired Elvis Presley for his song 'Heartbreak Hotel' but while he never visited, the Heartbreak Hotel stands as a testament to the legacy of his music. class="content__text" Coming soon! C/O Berlin Talent Award 2022 winner Karolina Woitas @matriioszka is showcasing her work 'Abzgram' at C/O Berlin from Jan 28 to May 4, 2023. In her project, steadily developed since 2017, Karolina Wojtas breaches every conceivable rule of photography through offbeat compositions, oversaturated colors, blur, and her aggressive use of flash. The complex multimedia work comprises videos and a confusion of photographs, some found and others staged by the artist. She prints these photos onto various materials, which transform exhibition spaces into room-sized installations. Karolina Wojtas invites visitors to interact with the objects in space, in arrangements that resemble reenactments, and thus transport themselves back to the world of childhood. The artist responds with caustic irony to the rigid Polish school system, which imposes rules on children with streaks of militarism. Wojtas finds a creative and sometimes biting form of criticism in particular with regard to the patriotic-nationalist tendency of current Polish politics. Karolina Wojtas was awarded by the jury consisting of @brunoceschel, @eli.cortinas, Dr. Eva-Maria Fahrner-Tutsek, Dr. Jane'a Johnson, @kathrin.schoenegg and @lars_willumeit. A catalog will accompany the exhibition, including work by Matthias Gründig @eelvshuman, winner of the C/O Berlin Talent Award 2022 in the category 'Theorist'. class="content__text" We are happy to bring a splash of color to the Berlin winter with our second exhibition starting in January: C/O Berlin will present 'Anastasia Samoylova . Floridas' from Jan 28 to May 4, 2023. In her photographic road trip through Florida, Anastasia Samoylova @anasamoylova shows the Sunshine State as a shimmering fantasy and subtropical dystopia that is equally marked by its deep political divide and by the impact of the climate crisis. Her works tell of colorful emptiness, bombastic materialism, and cultural artificiality, revealing incompatibility, existential threats, and dreariness. Her pictures track down numerous contradictions and challenge the many identities of Florida. Against the background of this dichotomy of staged perception and reality, Samoylova employs strategies of commercial photography in her artistic practice. As a photo artist of the present, she breathes new life into the typically American genre of road trip photography and imposes a female perspective on the genre's predominantly male view of America. class="content__text" We can't wait for our next exhibitions starting this January! C/O Berlin will present 'William Eggleston . Mystery of the Ordinary', a major retrospective on the American master of color photography, from Jan 28 to May 4, 2023. In a career spanning over five decades, William Eggleston has come to be recognized for almost single-handedly elevating color photography to the status of fine art. Eggleston recognized the beauty and mystery in the commonplace, and imbued his images with an element of the mysterious, made especially pronounced through color's unique relationship to perception. In addition to presenting famous series like 'Los Alamos', the exhibition also contains works that have never been seen before, including pictures from the series 'The Outlands' and images taken in Berlin between 1981 and 1988. A book accompanying the exhibition will be published by @steidlverlag.
