It took me so long to understand the flow in hip hop dance. See, when I started dancing (back in 2006) I fell for commercial choreography. It was all about separate sounds and beautiful moves for me. I remember how one of my mentors would always say that improvisation has to look like a perfectly musical choreography. He’d yell “stop and hold and stop and hold and go”. As a result I could make a stop harder than the rock, but my movement would always look broken. Besides that, I always tried to hit some specific sounds and beats, even without knowing nor feeling the music. As a result my improvisation sucked big time. I would win IDO just because of the energy, and I would always lose hip hop battles, because hitting some separate sounds strong is nothing against hitting the actual music, even if you just flow through it and miss some of the beats.

So yeah, here I am, learning stuff.
