Food insecurity and health are intricately linked. People living in food insecure homes experience challenges in accessing nutritious foods and face barriers to consistently adopting healthy eating patterns. This leads to an increased risk of developing health problems, including diabetes and hypertension. According to Feeding America’s Hunger in America 2014 report, a third of households served by the food bank network have at least one member living with diabetes and nearly 60% of households have someone living with hypertension. In addition, food insecure seniors are over twice as likely to report fair or poor general health, 74 percent more likely to be diabetic and 19 percent more likely to have high blood pressure.
