We are in Afie-Naa Kenkey house in Jamestown to have a conversation with a family that has been producing Ga Kenkey for centuries. Unfortunately, they have lamented the high cost of maize, the grain used in producing this local delicacy. At the moment, the price of a bag of maize has moved from ghc250 to ghc550, forcing Kenkey sellers to reduce the size of the ball, yet increase its price from ghc1/ghc1.50 to ghc2 and in some cases, ghc3. What message do they have for government, who through its Deputy Agric Minister, Yaw Frimpong Addo, recently announced a ban on the export of food produce to neighboring countries in order to avert a possible food crisis. Mind you, the Minister, Dr.Afriyie Akoto says what we are currently facing is food shortage, and not a crisis, because of the global pandemic that has affected the production of fertilizer, drought in the farming areas making the cultivation of crops, especially grains difficult, and our inability to pay fertilizer suppliers on time.
