Trees as living art - in a Japanese Garden, all trees are considered elements of design just as stone and gravel. As the garden grew into an idealization of the natural landscape, trees that suggested windswept shorelines were added. Branches were tied, twisted, wrapped and bound to groom them into the gnarls and bends of a centuries old pine. Often they need the support of wooden crutches as they are being “trained” to extend out over ponds or islands The manuel training of trees is taken to its most extreme in the art of Bonsai where seedlings are transferred to earthen pots and pruned and clipped on almost a daily basis in order to stunt growth. This art became prevalent as room for gardens grew scarcer. #livingart #japanesegardendesign #bonsai #bonsaiart

Its Climate Change week and if you would like to see what an idealized earth should be like, please have a look at my friend Pete Mcbride’s latest book, with the unlikely title: “Seeing Silence.” We tend to think of silence as the absence of sound but is actually the void where we can hear the sublime notes of nature. In “Seeing Silence,” Pete reveals the wonders of these hushed places in striking imagery—from the thin-air flanks of Mount Everest to the depths of the Grand Canyon, from the high-altitude vistas of the Atacama to the African savannah, and from the Antarctic peninsula to the flowing waters of the Ganges River. These photos remind us of the magic of being ‫“‬truly away” and how such pockets free from man-made noise are vanishing. Often showing beauty from vantages where no other photographer has ever stood, this is a seven-continent visual tour of global quietude—and the power in nature‫’‬s own sounds—that will both inspire and calm. In our ever changing environment caused by climate change it is more important than ever that we take action so that the places in Pete’s book and around the world can remain in their best state for the future. The Karakoram Highway is the highest paved international road in the world; it was once an important branch of the Silk Road which linked the Indian sub-continent with China. Today it’s considered to be the 8th wonder of the world, since the high altitude (15,000ft) and the hard conditions in which it was built made it an amazing engineering feat. It’s generally considered to be among the most spectacular roads on the planet. These photographs are part of my show, Echos of the Silk Road, which I will be presenting at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, CA (just east of SF) tomorrow, 9/16 at 7 pm. Looking forward to seeing you there. #karakoramhighway #silkroad @thesilkroadjourney #blackhawkmuseum #natgeolive

Water colors: Part of my latest NFT offering, the Four Seasons of Jiuzhaigou happening now on OpenSea. According to legend, the park’s 118 crystalline lakes were formed after a Tibetan god gave a mirror polished by the clouds and the wind to a goddess, who then dropped it, scattering its shards over what is now Jiuzhaigou National Park. The park is famous for its otherworldly beauty, with iridescent lakes that shimmer against a backdrop of deciduous forests and snow-capped mountains. One of the ten photographs of Afghanistan that are being auctioned this week as NFTs: Goat and sheep herders push their large flock along the banks of a river in Feyzabad, Afghanistan. Sheep are one of Feyzabad's few local resources. Afghanistan outside of Kabul is a land of shepherds and warriors, even today. Marco Polo described its inhabitants as “a people [who] worship Mohommet (Mohammed) and … have a peculiar language. They are gallant soldiers.” #Wakhan #wakhancorridor #Afghanistan #silkroad #marcopolo In an effort to help the innocent fleeing or trapped in Afghanistan, I am releasing 10 limited edition 1 of 1 photos as NFTs to help raise funds for No One Left Behind @nooneleftbehindus, joining an existing effort of digital artists who have donated artwork to NFTs for Saving Afghan. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to No One Left Behind, a focused and establish organization who’s mission is to extract and resettle the translators and allies. The NFTs for Saving Afghans available exclusively on @opensea. Link in @a_p_kingsbury bio - The auction is going on now till Sunday, September 5th.
