Happy birthday to HOFer, Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon! ✨ In 2016, he looked back on his days on the court: “As it turned out, being naive about basketball worked in my favor. I didn’t approach basketball with any preconceptions. When my coach told me to play the center position, I didn’t know what he meant. I could name the five positions, but I couldn’t really explain the difference between a center and a small forward. The summer before I began college, my coaches would yell at me during practice, ‘Hakeem, you’re playing center! Just stay in the key!’ I didn’t want to stay in the key. I watched the guards and I was inspired by their creativity. The key was boring. I wanted to dance in and out of the paint, all over the court. I saw guards handling the ball and I’d say, ‘Man, I want to do that stuff.’ So I developed my outside game. I didn’t just do big man drills. I worked on my dribbling and my mid-range jumper. I worked on my passing and my footwork. If I had a slower guy guarding me, I would draw him outside of his element. I could get an easy jumper, or I could cross him over and beat him to the rim. If he was smaller, I’d get early position inside and post him up. I learned that basketball and soccer are similar in at least one way: You take what the defense gives you. Soon, coaches stopped telling me to stay in the key.” (link in bio) • 📸: @widnerrocky, Focus on Sport, @adbphotoinc

“Sometimes, growing up, I liked to think of it this way: My body was covered in stories. Yes — that sounds nice. The scars.... they’re almost not even scars. They just mark my stories. They’re almost like tattoos, in this way. Almost. Except there’s one important difference, I realized: I didn’t get to choose my scars. A scar is a story that happens to you. You don’t own a scar — you survive a scar. I want to own my story. That’s something I’ve begun to discover, more and more clearly, as I’ve grown older: this desire I have to reclaim my body — to reclaim my life — as a story that only I get to tell. To say the hard part out loud: I was abused. To define it. Not let it define me. Over the course of my adulthood, that desire has manifested itself in all types of ways. It has manifested itself in a love of tattoos. Tattoos, unlike scars, you get to choose. And each tattoo I have is full of so many of my own choices — each of them represents such an important part of me. When I get a new tattoo, it’s like me saying: I want my story told in this color, and this size, in this location, that looks like this, and reminds me of this, and this, and this. So, where my actual scars might reflect these moments of powerlessness? My new scars, the way I choose to mark my body up with tattoos.... I feel this deep PURPOSE in it. I feel the most amazing sense of self. It has also manifested itself in a career in sports. Being an athlete has changed my life forever, and I’ll always be grateful... But I didn’t get into sports to win, exactly. I got into them because of what they’ve helped me to understand about myself. Sports have made me see how the body — my body — has a power that should never be underestimated.” —@oksanamasters 🤍 (link in bio) • 📸: @taylorbaucom

“The truth is, I was treated differently, all the time, by the other teams. I remember the first time I had to tell my mom about something that went down in the rink. I was right in front of the net, protecting our goalie from someone trying to score on us. Then, out of nowhere, he goes, ‘Get out of my face, n*****.’ I was so shocked. I said, ‘What did you say?’ My teammates rallied behind me immediately. The refs intervened to make sure the kids stopped pushing and shoving, but they didn’t say anything to the guy who said that to me. There was no time to even process it. The puck was dropped right after that. And I just had to keep playing. Me and my parents hadn’t really talked about what it meant for me as a Black girl to be playing hockey. I think they just didn’t want to scare me. But at that point, my mom had to address it. That first night she sat me down and made some things clear. She told me, ‘Baby, listen. I’m sorry this happened to you, but you need to know something. This is the reality of our world.’ She also told me that the reason she named me Blake was so that nobody would discriminate against me on a job application or in college admissions just based on my name. It’s kind of racially ambiguous. On paper, people might assume I was a white male. That was really eye-opening for me. She’d felt as though she had to try to protect me from racism and sexism since the day I was born. She knew I’d face this and she’d tried to get ahead of it. She just didn’t know that I was going to have to face something like that so soon. ‘You’re loved,’ she told me. ‘You’re supported. The color of your skin doesn’t make you any less valuable. You should be proud of who you are, where you come from.’” —@sportblake Full 📝 at the link in bio. • 📸: @timclaytonphoto, @brian_babs_babineau

“It’s 1949, I’m 14 years old, and my hometown team has just won the Junior Championships. In baseball, that is. The reward for winning is a fairly good one: our whole team gets a trip… We’re going to meet Jackie Robinson. It’s happening on our last day, after a Dodgers game in Brooklyn. Jackie has just broken baseball’s color barrier — only two years prior, in 1947 — and already, to us, he’s nothing short of an icon. So we watch the Dodgers game — one teammate more excited than the next. It ends, as games do. It’s finally time. It’s time to meet Jackie.... ‘Nice to meet you, Mr. Robinson,’ I say. ‘I’m Willie O’Ree.’ ‘Nice to meet you, Willie,’ Jackie says, shaking my hand. He flashes a smile, and I can sense him moving on — shifting his posture to the next kid on the team. I turn to him, slightly. ‘I’m a baseball player,’ I say, raising my voice. ‘But what I really love — is hockey.’ ‘Oh?” Jackie says, turning back to me, still smiling. ‘I didn’t know Black kids played hockey.’ I smile back. ‘Yup.’ It’s 1962, I’m 27 years old, and I’ve just been invited to an NAACP luncheon. I’m there with the coach of my current team, the Los Angeles Blades, and a few other players. My coach notices the guest of honor, standing over in the corner — minding his business, talking to some people. He waits a few minutes for their conversation to end. And then he brings me over. He taps the guest of honor on the shoulder. ‘Mr. Robinson, I’d like you to meet one of our players, Willie O’Ree.’ Jackie Robinson turns around, and looks at me for a moment. ‘Willie O’Ree,” he says, shaking my hand. “You’re the young fellow I met in Brooklyn.’ I’m 80 years old now, and it’s hard to believe where the time has gone. All of these years later — people still, to this day, will come up to me and say, ‘I didn’t know Black kids played hockey.’ And when they do, I’ll crack that same smile I cracked to Jackie back in 1949. And then I’ll turn to them slightly, raise my voice just a little, and say the only word that anyone discovering this game should ever have to know: ‘Yup.’” —Willie O‘Ree

@ya.boy.scottie put some action behind these words. 💪 “I’m ready to work. Not ease into it, not half-do things or make excuses because I’m one of the new guys. I’m ready to work. I’m ready to grind. I’m ready to WIN. And I could tell that the feeling was definitely mutual.” (link in bio) • 📸: @vaughnridley, @mblinch, @john_fisher_photography
