In the pod. It’s hard to explain just how special it is to be allowed to swim within a pod of dolphins and then witness their obvious conscientious tender touch as well. Most, if not all the time, they’re just too quick and we’re not interesting enough. In the community and safety of the pod, communication is obviously key for success in the open ocean. And while these wonderful mammals are often seen playing and cavorting, it’s their camaraderie and love for one another that is most beguiling. Like these two as if on their own Valentine’s during a @bigbluecollective adventure. I’ve watch this clip over and over again. Still spellbound. music by: AK - Wanderlust @aljoshakonstanty 💫 #dolphins #valentines #dolphinlove #ocean #oceansnation #whalesnation #ocean_magazine #uwphotography #underwaterphotography #roam247

Lounging out. After 3000 + mile swim, chilling in the tropical seas is high on the agenda. Rest and recovery is much needed as the mating game is about to begin…… 🎥 @philipshearer - Shot on adventure with @bigbluecollective #oceansnation #whalesnation #wildlifeplanet #oceanfervor #kingsofthedeep #gopro10 #gopro #humpbackwhales #turksandcaicos #roam247 #whales #saltnomads

Calm in the shallows. A massive humpback mother and her newborn calf find protection behind the reef. It’s always amazing to see these gentle giants up close and even more astounding in water barely 15’ deep. 📷 @philipshearer #humpbackwhales #whalesnation #oceansnation #oceanlife #whalewatching #freediving #gopro #goprofamily

Last light. In the remaining minutes before sunset, light, visibility and colour drain rapidly from the water column. This lone male humpback briefly stopped it’s song to catch air and allow us a final glimpse before his giant mass slipped below and into the darkness that had enveloped us all….. I can only imagine what their song must feel like once night falls. 📷 @philipshearer during a @bigbluecollective trip #humpbackwhales #whalesnation #bealpha #oceansnation #sealife #roam247 #oceanlife #uwphotography #uwphoto #oceansnation #uwphotosociety

Apex. Few species in the tropical seas generate as much fear and fascination as the mighty Tiger Shark. Built for stealth, with a wide ranging diet these nomads of the deep love the shallows preying on turtles, rays and other sharks as well as fish. Being in the water with them is always mesmerising. Their cautious, measured approach belies an unjust reputation of a mindless killer. Sitting at the top of the food chain means they are vital to the health of our seas. If you ever do see one, count yourself lucky. #Replacefearwithfascination #tigershark #turksandcaicos Shot during @sharkweek with @kingaphilipps @draustingallagher @foproductions @markrackleyproductions #sharkdiving #sealife #roam247 #bealpha 📷 @philipshearer

Size matters. A new born practically piggy backs it’s mother. Aside from the obvious bond and security displayed, slipstreaming is a highly efficient and effective way for these tiny and helpless calves to conserve energy while travelling through the seas. 📷 @philipshearer #humpbackwhales #whales #sealife #whalewatching #oceansnation #ocean #bealpha #turksandcaicos

The tale of a whale. Spanning a massive twelve to fifteen feet tip to tip, the mighty flukes of a whale powers them effortlessly across the oceans. In the case of the humpback, supreme muscular structure and strength in their caudal peduncle (lower trunk) together with their flukes also propels their forty tonne bodies clear out of the water during a breach. For all whales, like this mother’s, her tail is also a devastating defensive weapon, used to protect her young calf. For newborns and yearlings simply don’t have the strength or the stamina to cover oceanic distances without close maternal protection while also conserving energy slip streaming their mother’s pressure wave. Seen here, literally lying on her giant back, the juvenile will hardly leave it’s mother’s side unless she is absolutely sure of safe surroundings. The tender care and intimacy displayed only highlights an all too obvious emotional intelligence far deeper than words could ever convey. 📷 @philipshearer #humpbackwhale #whaletail #whales #sealife #whalesnation #oceansnation #bealpha

Lockdown calf. Found this massive mother resting with her new year’s newborn calf playing in the shallows beside her. With Winter not far away, she’ll soon be turning her attention to the monumental southward journey ahead of her. Fraught with all sorts of perils, her calf, now ten months old will be glued to her side. Touch tight. Together they will join the annual humpback migration towards the warm tropical seas of the Caribbean. Wishing them both safe passage. #humpbackwhales #whalesnation #oceansnation #whales #bealpha #sonyalpha #turksandcaicos

Inquisitive. Scooter glances by in water as clear as a swimming pool. While all the attention is focused on this little one, what continues to blow my mind is just how tolerant Bo, the mother is. She’s always close by but rarely gets as involved. And with some seemingly imperceptible instruction, (certainly to us) Scooter knows exactly when playtime is over and slides in touch tight, usually under her belly, as they move on. It’s astounding on so many levels. Once again my mind is gratefully blown away. 📷 @philipshearer #dolphins #turksandcaicos #wildandfree #uwphotography #uwphoto #sealife #oceansnation

The Gang. These islands are blessed with wild dolphins. But it’s easy to forget when mesmerised by their easy fluidity just how awesome Bottlenose dolphins are as predators. Growing up to a massive 12-14’ and weighing in at over 1000 lbs, these highly social apex predators use their intelligence and echolocation to track their prey. In water or If one zooms in closely, one could be forgiven for thinking these are Atlantic spotted dolphins. However, these spots are confined to their undersides and even then, their sheer size make them unmistakably Bottlenose. Either way they are true ocean ambassadors allowing us to dream what it might be like to really swim so effortlessly. 📷 @philipshearer

Curiosity. The sand, seemingly devoid of life, is surprising full of life and food if you know how to find it. With incredible acoustic sonar, dolphins make light work of all the little fish and crustaceans hiding under the sea bed. Little Scooter is a perfect model when actually staying still enough. 📷 @philipshearer #dolphins #turksandcaicos #wildandfree #ocean #sealife #saltnomads #oceansnation
