Large walrus groups like this one travel long distances in search of clam beds, which provide their primary food source in the quantities required to sustain them. With the loss of multi-year Arctic ice, they have no choice but to rest on land between feeding forays, which expends a great deal of energy and leaves them susceptible to polar bear predation. A wildlife action shot like 'Tusked Titans' is incredibly challenging to capture because everything happens so fast – often too fast for me to comprehend. When one of these moments arrives, I set my camera to fire as many frames per second as possible and hang on tight. With a little luck, there will be a beautiful moment hidden amongst the near misses. // To inquire about this piece or view my entire print catalog, please visit the link in my bio. #Photography #Art #Walrus #Svalbard #Norway #Arctic #ClimateChange #Conservation #Action #HighSpeed #Unpredictable

Yesterday's post was difficult to stomach, but I believe it is sometimes necessary to confront the brutality of our species before we can find the will to change. @Mitty, myself, and everyone on the @OnlyOne and @SeaLegacy teams was blown away by your response – our petition urging the Faroese Prime Minister to end their brutal, annual slaughter has already grown to nearly 150,000 signatures. I have never seen support like this before, and you have renewed my confidence that, together, we can do great things. If you have not yet added your name, please consider doing so at the link in my bio. There will be more heartbreaking imagery and news in the days to come, but for now, let's take a collective breath and remember how much more beautiful white-sided dolphins are in life than they are in death. #Dolphin #WhiteSidedDolphin #FaroeIslands #Faroe #Slaughter #VisitFaroeIslands #ForTheOcean #SaveTheOcean #MarineConservation #OnlyOne

Please comment with a 💔 if you find these images of slaughtered white-sided dolphins as horrific as I do. They are the victims of a traditional dolphin hunt called Grindadráp (or "The Grind") that takes place annually on the shores of the Faroe Islands, an archipelago between Iceland and Norway. Last week's horrific event is estimated to be the largest single cull in the island's history, with even seasoned whalers deeming the slow, cruel mass killing of over 1,400 white-sided dolphins in a single day unethical. I don't believe "tradition" is an adequate justification for this senseless practice. In fact, I can't think of a single reason why it should be allowed to continue. If you agree, please visit the link in my bio and sign our @OnlyOne petition urging the Faroese Prime Minister to end the Grindadráp for good. With @SeaLegacy. Eagle rays are generally shy, sensitive creatures, so having this fever swirl around me like some curious, underwater tornado was a rare experience. In a world where climate change is the biggest threat facing our planet, blue economies like The Bahamas should not be jeopardized by destructive foreign interests. I believe investment in long-term, sustainable solutions that benefit marine ecosystems, local communities, and our planet as a whole is the path to shaping our shared future for the better. @Mitty and I are traveling to New York and Washington this Climate Week, where we will work with world leaders to advance environmental priorities – wish us luck. My thanks to @CaptJDog_ for his guidance. #ClimateWeek #ClimateWeekNYC #Ray #EagleRay #Bahamas #TheBahamas #TurningTheTide #OnlyOneOcean #ClimateChange #Solutions #Priorities

The adoration with which an emperor penguin parent regards its chick is a warmth unmatched on Antarctica's raw sea ice. In this harsh and exposed environment, both parents must make incredible sacrifices to ensure the survival of their offspring. Males fast for two months as they incubate eggs in -40℃ (-40℉) weather, losing nearly a third of their body weight in the process. Meanwhile, females march upwards of 180 miles (300 km) and navigate frigid, predator-filled waters to provide a belly full of krill, fish, and squid for the newborn – a journey from which many never return. It is these extraordinary displays of utter dedication that inspired the title 'Commitment' for one of my favorite photographs. // To inquire about this piece or view my entire print catalog, please visit the link in my bio. #Photography #Art #BW #BlackAndWhite #Penguin #EmperorPenguin #Chick #Antarctica #Parent #Adoration #Responsibility #Sacrifice #Commitment

I often wonder what it is about wolves that we find so insufferable. Tens of thousands of years ago, the future of our two species became intertwined forever, and an estimated 50% of US households are now home to at least one dog. Why is it, then, that we so resolutely persecute the wild counterparts of our best friends? Do we resent them for having resisted our attempts at subjugation so long ago? As I write this, there are callous campaigns all across North America to hunt down and exterminate wolves simply for being, and it breaks my heart that a unique community like BC's coastal wolves is "On the Rocks" due to fear and contempt that has no foundation in reality. I am very excited to share this new release with you today. My thanks to Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, longtime @NatGeo editor, and dear friend @KenGeiger for his vision and insight on this piece and so many others. I have worked alongside Ken for more than a decade – he is the person I trust most to have eyes on my work. Give him a follow to see the many beautiful images he has captured all around the world. // To inquire about this piece or view my entire print catalog, please visit the link in my bio. #Photography #Art #Wolf #CoastalWolf #BC #BritishColumbia #Canada #Fear #Contempt #BestFriends #WorstEnemies #WhereDidWeGoWrong

When is a photograph considered art? I do not think that there is any right answer. For me, nature is art. Animals are art. Animals in their environment are art. Capturing magical light on any subject is art. What do you think? I do know that the ever changing mood, light, energy, and reflections around water makes for some of the most beautiful canvas I have ever painted on with my camera. Here, these orcas are cruising through a glassy surface to assess us while I admired them in all of their artistry. These images have not yet made it into my art collection. To see which orcas images did make the cut please go to the link in my bio and visit my Art Collection. #happyfineartfriday #gratitude #orca

We launched @OnlyOne a year ago today in the middle of a global pandemic that left many feeling isolated but also underscored our interdependence with each other and nature. Since then, our community has embraced that connection, making strides to fulfill our collective responsibility of protecting the ocean and the planet we all call home. We have made tremendous progress in this first year, but this is just the beginning. I hope you will join us as we dive even deeper into the work ahead and, if you haven't already, consider joining the nearly 8,000 other Tide community members supporting our work with monthly contributions. Please visit the link in my bio to learn more. 🙏💙 Video by @OnlyOne and @Ryan_Borne. #TurningTheTide #OnlyOneOcean #OceanConservation

Episode three of "SeaLegacy: The Voyage" is now available on YouTube – please visit the link in my bio to see it in full today. In 2020, @Mitty and I visited The Bahamas to capture Hurricane Dorian's aftermath. It was a painful illustration of natural disasters made more intense by climate change – the effect these increasingly powerful storms have on coral reefs and tropical communities is truly devastating. Nearly two years later, we returned to discover what had and hadn't changed since the storm hit. Episode three, titled "Return to Abaco," is a story of heartbreak and resiliency. The entire @SeaLegacy crew has worked tirelessly alongside @SonyAlpha to create this behind-the-scenes series featuring our lives near the ocean – we can't wait to hear what you think. With @Mitty, @SheltonDupreez, @AndyMaser, and @Andy_Mann. #SonyAlpha #SonyAlphaUniverse #SonyArtisan #BeAlpha #SeaLegacy #TheVoyage #YouTube #Series #BTS #BehindTheScenes #EpisodeThree #Bahamas #TheBahamas #Hurricane #Dorian #HurricaneDorian #ClimateChange #Conservation #FrontLines

Ariel, you are such a beautiful young female sperm whale and hanging out with you was like a drug. We searched for you everyday and part of me thinks that you looked forward to seeing us too. At least, you showed great curiosity when we slipped into the water with you. Your species has the largest brain of any living creature on Earth and I would love to know your thoughts. At the front of your head is a large complex of organs filled with a liquid mixture of fats and waxes called spermaceti which you use to echolocate and I would love to know what X-ray images you create deep below the surface in the pitch black. But, then I look into your eye and it all makes sense; I feel like I can read you. I see that you are curious, playful, inquisitive, soft natured, brave and just outright beautiful. Thanks for letting me into your world. Photographed on assignment for @sealegacy under special interaction permit in Dominica. #spermwhale #bw #gratitude

There is an ironic beauty in the collapse of our global climate. To me, this waterfall represents our species' failure to act in the face of the single greatest threat we have ever encountered. Still, amidst the Arctic's deafening silence, the sound of meltwater rushing from this void in the ice filled me with serenity. The outcome of this journey is up to us – if we could each take just one step to reduce our impact today, however big or small, we would very quickly find our planet on the path to recovery. I am so grateful to have you along for this conservation journey. Please stay tuned for many exciting developments to come. // To inquire about this piece or view my entire print catalog, please visit the link in my bio. #Photography #Art #BW #BlackAndWhite #Ice #Water #Waterfall #Svalbard #Norway #Arctic #GlobalWarming #ClimateChange #Conservation #Journey #OnAMission #Gratitude
