“There are among us people who assume their authority is so great they can dictate what happened; that their assertions will override witnesses, videotapes, evidence, the historical record; that theirs is the only voice that matters, and it matters so much it can stand tall atop the conquered facts. Lies are aggressions. They are attempts to trample down the facts and those who hold them, and they lay the grounds for dictatorships, the little ones in families, the big ones in nations.” - Rebecca Solnit. We love a good festive tree made out of books, and this one is gorgeous ❤️😍
Merry Christmas everyone! 🎄☃️🎁

No trees were harmed in the making of this tree! Ok fine…maybe a lot of trees were harmed, but at least they will live on and be loved and not just thrown away in a month!
•
I have always wanted to make a book tree. So I decided this year maybe I would make a small one on a side table. Once I got started I realized you have to go big or go home though. So here is this years Christmas Tree! I estimate there are about 180 books making it up. Honestly the worst part was just bringing all the books down from the third floor!
•
I am so in love with this tree! I just want to sit and stare at it all day long! The original plan was to get some garland for it but they all looked so fake and you know I’m not putting real sappy garland on my books! So instead I made some paper flowers to decorate!
•
As a fun side note….my shelves are now empty! Which means they need books. Which means when I take this tree down I will definitely need a bigger bookshelf!
•
For another fun side note: y’all should see me when I need to switch a book out to read it! I put my arcs toward the top for easier access but it’s really funny to switch them out. I’ll have to take a video of it at some point!

Thank you so much for reading along 👍and your mittens are AWESOME! 💗🧤#Repost @knit2togheather

“There is always enough for everyone, if you share it properly, or if it has been shared properly before you get there. There is enough food, enough love, enough homes, enough time, enough crayons, enough people to be friends with each other.” I had the happy coincidence of my Rebecca Solnit books arriving at the library while working on these mittens that match the covers! 💜💙 After reading the intro to “Whose Story Is This?” I immediately went to the store and bought it. Sometimes the most important question we can ask about a history or story is who isn’t represented here? Who benefits most from the story being told this way? Rebecca Solnit’s writing is eloquent and generous and I’m savoring every word she writes. Thank you @oursharedshelf for picking this wonderful book.
These #edgewisemittens are the first mitts I’ve made and they were such a fun and quick knit. Pattern from @kittywithacupcake Yarn from @spacecadetyarn in Nine Stones

Sometimes I agree so fiercely with Solnit that I wonder if I should be reading something else, something that stretches my perspective. "Is Rebecca Solnit my personal echo chamber?" I wonder. But she helps me. Solnit the historian gives me the deep pool of evidence I crave to piece together why I believe the things I believe. Solnit the activist reminds me that just because the people around me and I all believe in something, that doesn't mean that conviction has been spoken enough. Some stories-- BLM, me too, climate change - need to be told and told and told and told, from the mouths of different people, about different people, until finally it is inked into the collective conviction of all and not a few. Until we can all experience the privilege of not being questioned about our right and desire and need to tell these stories. #oursharedshelf #rebeccasolnit #essays #cyndisreadinglist #bookstagram @oursharedshelf

This one’s an oldie in the city but one we hadn’t even thought to visit before now - the (once private) library of J. P. Morgan. It’s home to some pretty impressive pieces of art and original, hand written works from Charles Dickens, Robert Burns and so many other iconic writers. Feels like we discovered a ‘hidden’ gem of New York City...
