On this day we honor the indomitable spirit and visionary work of Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Born in Jamaica on August 17, 1887, Garvey is one of the most well-known leaders of the “Back to Africa” and Pan-African movements, understanding the linked fate of Black people globally and “Africa for Africans” as a source of power. Garvey was inspired by Booker T. Washington to build independent Black economies. He formed the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in 1914, under the motto, “One God! One Aim! One Destiny!” UNIA remains one of the largest mass movements in history, with more than one million recorded members. To realize Black economic power, Garvey founded a manufacturing company and the Black Star Ship Line, which was collectively invested in and for the benefit of Black people globally. Ultimately, Garvey and the UNIA posed such a threat to white capitalism, that he was on J. Edgar Hoover’s hit list and was targeted, arrested, and imprisoned. During his 3 year incarceration he wrote “First Message to the Negroes of the World from an Atlanta Prison,” committing, “In death I shall be a terror to the foes of Negro liberty.” Onward!

On this day 5 years ago, @kaepernick7 took a knee during the national anthem at a home football game. And people got MAD mad. Mad because he refused to be another Black man that an entire industry capitalized on. Because he did not play the game like people wanted him to. Because he made it hard to ignore the attacks on Black life that were, yet again, happening in 2016. 5 years later, he remains unsigned. An industry he gave so much to failed to support him. Colin Kaepernick, we’re with you. #ImWithKap #StillWithKap ✊🏿 1. Art by @nikkolas_smith, reposted by @kaepernick7 2. Art by @luciano_art, reposted by @yourrightscamp 3. It’s the Black boy joy for us… Black boys are forced to be men far too young. Our society throws stereotypes and expectations at them from the minute they’re born. It’s why we have The Talk. It’s why we learn to live with the fear that comes each time they leave the house. Black boy joy is mundane. It is boring. It is when Black boys are simply allowed to be BLACK BOYS. And we love to see it. Last week, the authors and editors of the new collection, “Black Boy Joy” went on air on @cbsthismorning to talk about this beautiful piece. It’s about stories that rarely get told, representation, magic in the most simple things…about what joy looks like for them @mbalia1 @iamgmjohnson @jasonreynolds83 @jerrycraft, @treize64 Y’all created something beautiful. Check out the full interview in our stories. Find “Black Boy Joy” at your local bookstore and online. 1. Why Black boy joy? 2. It’s liberation for me 3. Humanity and magic, in mundanity, for Black people. I believe that Black people are as boring as everybody else… 4. Joy is the final destination, but the route everyone takes is totally different 5. The book was not about asking permission anymore, it’s about taking up space- a bold attempt at a counter narrative that we rarely get to explore/see. / This book is about giving our Black boys something else that they can hold onto in a world that tells them that they’re not worthy of grabbing onto anything. 6. Where is there space for the Black boy to figure out what he wants to do, what brings him joy? 7. LAUGHTER ❤️ 8. We gotta make sure Black men publicly tell each other that they love each other.

The history and meaning of the Olympics is loaded. Anti-Blackness, exploitation of the Black body, police militarization, heightened criminalization, attacks on houseless folks… the list is long. How do we honor the Black excellence of our athletes, while not ignoring the ugliness that is the Olympic-Industrial Complex? We put these issues front and center for you today— for us to think through collectively. AND, we also want to highlight the commitment, achievement, and excellence that it takes to become a worldwide recognized athlete. To our Black Olympic athletes: we are so proud of you. To the Olympics industry: it’s still fuck you. Pictured: 1) Alysia Montaño 2) Allyson Felix 3) JuVaughn Harrison 4) Noah Lyles & Josephus Lyles 5) A beautiful representation of the African diaspora

Black folks have always found new ways to break the mold, redefine innovation, and push creative boundaries in different realms, including music. Today, we honor one of the biggest and most influential musical genres in today’s culture: hip hop. It’s commonly agreed that hip hop was born on August 11th, 1973 at a party in the Bronx, New York, where Jamaican-born Clive Campbell, aka DJ Kool Herc, was spinning. His legendary set and success at the party earned him the title of hip hop’s founding father and sparked a musical revolution that evolved to the hip hop we know and love today. #HappyBirthdayHipHop ✊🏿🎉 Big respect to the one and only @officialdjkoolherc!🙌🏿 Slide 1 & 2: Video on DJ Kool Herc’s epic contribution to hip hop & its origins (by @untoldedu) Slide 3: Original flyer for the party where hip hop was born Slide 4: Party location in the Bronx, NY

Today is the 7th angelversary of #EzellFord, who was murdered by LAPD officers Sharlton Wampler and Antonio Villegas. The officers were found “out of policy” for stopping him at all, but they’ve never been prosecuted…and as far as we know…never disciplined. Pray for his family and struggle for justice in the name of Ezell Ford. #BlackLivesMatter

This is our congresswoman 👏🏾 When most congress members left for their summer recess before extending the eviction moratorium, Congresswoman @coribush was looking out for her community. For five days, she camped out to demand an extension to the moratorium. She called on organizers and activists to join her in her demands—the people’s demands. Congresswoman: we see you. And we’re with you. Thank you. Video by Jalelah Ahmed for Birddog Nation.

On this day, Black women catch up to what a white man earns in one year. That means it takes Black women over 7 more months to make the SAME amount a white man makes in one year. We deserve more. We deserve better. Demand Black women are paid equitably. Demand better from the systems we are a part of-- out of survival's sake. ✅ Share your salary & wage, so we know how our peers are being paid ✅ Tune into @equalpay2day's talk to learn more about Black women's pay during the pandemic and beyond

Today is James Baldwin’s birthday— a Black queer writer, thinker, and activist. To honor him, we’re loving on our kin, because “Black kin and care is balm”...exactly as he prescribed. Birthday love to James Baldwin ##### Repost from @jamesbaldwinarchive “Black joy is necessary. Black leisure is imperative. Black kin and care is a balm. Always. And especially in a white supremacist state. #JamesBaldwin
